I know I’m late for such thoughts and reflections, but I wasn’t around when it happened, so I’m thinking about it now.
Before Shadowlands, Revendreth was a sort of a purgatory. It temporarily housed the souls of sinners until they either found redemption or were branded as irredeemable and sent to the Maw.
So as long as the flux of souls coming in was about the same as the flux of souls going out, Revendreth could have a stable population.
(Inb4 Sinrunner jokes)
But after the new Arbiter decreed that no one is irredeemable and no one is to be sent to the Maw, Revendreth is now the one and only WoW Hell.
So now every sinful soul in existence will go to Revendreth, and if they never find redemption, they are just going to stay in there forever.
That will lead to accumulation.
So basically prepare for the Vampire apocalypse lol
Years from now when Metzen is retired and allowed to be as candid as possible, we’ll get an interview with him asking “So, what do you ACTUALLY think about Shadowlands lore?”
If I’m remembering right, the number of souls that actually went to the Maw was very, very small before the Jailer broke everything. Hardly anyone was sent there directly (iirc the only example we were given is that the Arbiter probably dunked Gul’dan there) and the Venthyr only did it as a final, final resort, being willing to spend thousands of years working on individual souls otherwise.
We’ve seen that the abundance of anima can cause different afterlives to either shrink (seen with parts of Ardenweald falling off) or expand their domain (seen with the Maw expanding to encompass Oribos, which allowed the Jailer to physically reach the Arbiter). Whatever influx Revendreth may experience, the realm will be able to expand to accommodate it.
i would guess that the size of revendreth would increase to correspond with the number of souls inhabiting it
also i really didn’t intend for those to be the only afterlives there are all the other ones like orc ancestral afterlives and the holy light heaven or whatever and all that
Realistically speaking, as long as they had lots of anima to contribute, the problem solves itself. it would ONLY be a problem if all the souls coming in were suddenly like…I dunno children or weak unaccomplished people?
