I just dusted off my hunter. He’s been around since Vanilla, but in mothballs since Wrath. I’m wanting to go farm some transmog/mounts/pets and so forth soon. I’m aware that any spec of any class can handle old content (heroics, raids, even world farming), but I’m looking for some advice on which hunter spec/build can do it most efficiently. I’ve been leveling as BM, and I feel like I would be fighting against the pet trying to keep mobs alive while they group and getting him to be where he needs to be to take them down quickly.

BM is the best old content spec in the game

For anything that’s a lengthy fight: BM, if only for the pet holding threat much more easily.
For running through an instance one-shotting everything: either BM or MM, but I would actually prefer MM so I don’t have to worry about my pet catching up to me.

I’m talking about farming stuff I can one-shot, not doing ‘extreme solo’ content. I’m talking about face pulling half of an instance, then quickly mowing them down, then doing the second half. I’m just afraid that the pet will be more of a hindrance than a help.
Yeah, if you are just doing that then go Marksman since your pet could probably lag behind. Both specs can spec into Barrage to kill a large amount of enemies at once, though.

No, I was asking which spec can round up forty mobs at a time, one shot them quickly, then repeat a dozen time without scattering corpses to loot all over the dungeon or having a pet dragging them around.
SV with Guerilla Tactics and carve is actually pretty good to farm with. Personally I tend to go with what ever spec I have the Longstrider trait on it.
Come to think of it, BM with barrage without a pet summoned may be the best way of going about it. Sounds strange, but since the mobs are 1-shot anyway you don’t need a pet and BM has much higher passive focus regen than MM.
But this is splitting hairs, to be honest. Both BM and MM will be equally efficient.
I think SV would be worse because it doesn’t have Barrage; you need to ensure that everything is stacked up, and some of the mobs will be casting.
Most places they are within the damage cone. The time they are not, it’s only one mob and SrS works just fine, though I haven’t solo’d much Legion content lately.
