I love playing hunters in Classic. But as I leveled higher and higher (never above 60 in TBC), I find that I can do little more than cast hunter’s mark, serpent sting, and auto shot for 4-5 fights before I am OOM.
I know things change with Aspect of the Viper, but prior to having that available, is there something I can do to output more dps efficiently? On my level 60, I have almost 300 agility, so decent crit/ap, but I do pretty awful dps (BM) as compared to what I think hunters should be doing.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Classic WoW Hunter discord:
You’ll be pretty mana starved while levelling and yes you will run out of mana every few fights. It gets a little better at level 70 with gear and Viper but the class is pretty dependent on mana consumables. Serpent Sting + auto attack is the best for preserving mana, and yes that will be lower DPS. You sacrifice DPS in exchange for spending less time drinking.
Also in BC the way it works is mana regen doesn’t kick in until spending 5 secs of casting nothing. If you are just starting with HM and SS and then auto attacking you should be able to go quite a bit before having to drink. 4-5 fights sounds more like you’re using other abilities along the way so there’s nothing else to check other than see what mana you’re spending on just HM and SS and what mana you’re gaining during the fight.

I will occasionally use Bestial Wrath or Intimidation on CD, but neither is a part of the normal rotation. I seriously don’t use much else. And to ensure maximum mana gains, I cast both to start and do nothing else.
