Edited for pruning
Blizzard could certainly make things more clear as to how all that worked. Especially to people new to the whole MMO thing.
Of course, this is the same company that said “Don’t you have cell phones,” so they are presuming a certain level of knowledge by the person.
I think they handled that wrong. If you bought your subscription, used your boost, and then went to CS all on the same day, it’s clear you made a mistake. I would have given you a new boost, but deleted your toon.
But that’s me.
I wish I could give you a better outcome.
Honestly, you should’ve at least asked your friend about this. But blizz should definitely put you into the realm select screen first instead of sticking you on a pre-selected realm.
Did you explain that you are a brand new player and ask for just a realm transfer to your friend’s realm?
I should have been more clear about this.
This topic is actually open in Customer Service, and the reason why the CS team couldn’t handle it has to do with tool functionality. The initial Level boost was part of the Epic bundle and not a separate item they can refund, and refunded the second one would result in locking my active character.
Ideally they could have handled it better, but in reality they don’t have the power to make too many choices. They seem to be operating inside of a structured support program that they likely don’t administrate.
If there had been a server selection screen, I might have agreed with you. But it’s not universal that characters are server-locked, and I don’t think everyone is coming from an MMO background where they are. It might not be that big a deal, but we don’t all have the money to just pay for the solution, and I could think of a few younger kids I know that wouldn’t have known what to do after being shot down by CS the way I was.
Also, there are no realm transfers for three days after using a character boost. If I had waited, there probably would have been other solutions. But its not possible to put the understanding of tool functionality specifics on the customer base- we can’t predict in what ways they have locked their own service tools against themselves, even if policy tries to explain it.
…why would you have to boost a 2nd character? You said yourself there was a 3 day timer on the transfer, so just wait it out. You can still play with your friends cross-server.
I’m not following what happened after you boosted a toon, but I don’t believe they would’ve refused you a realm transfer if you explained to them that you’re a new player and didn’t know. Of course, if you just asked for a straight refund, then that’s another matter.
I only learned there was a three day timer later on.
When you attempt to transfer a character after it has been boosted, it doesn’t tell you. It just says it can’t be done right then.
It’s possible I could have just waited it out. That’s not really the purpose of this topic. It’s not possible for us to assume the customer knows what the CS are capable of doing- on our end, refunding a digital product of one kind is not any different then refunding one of another. It’s only on their end, in their specific toolset, that they design it to be that way.
So, creating a new character in the proper place, and then asking for a refund in the amount of extra spent, is only unreasonable in the context that they lock their own computers tools out in specific ways. It’s functionally no different from a coding or financing perspective.
But that wasn’t the point. The point was that none of this would have happened if I was a younger kid just trying to get started- I only learned what I learned because I’m an adult. I think it would be relatively simple for the developers to just add a tiny bit of warning, maybe prevent some kid from spending money he doesn’t have on accident.
I recreated my character in the correct server and purchased what I had to, and then asked to rectify it afterwards.
This might seem unreasonable to you, but I’d argue it’s only unreasonable under the construct that gifting realm transfers is somehow easier than refunded digital character boosts, which it’s actually not any different. It’s only different in the way that that tools are created for CS, in that one automatically locks active characters, and the other (theoretically) does not. They are almost identically priced, as well. Not that that changes anything either.
But again, that’s not really the point. The point was just to add some developer suggestion to possibly avoid this happening for someone else. I’m likely to just delete the thread or lock it if possible. I attempted to post this where it would be relevant, but it’s a moot topic in a general discussion thread, because its just aimlessly going into the void.
The idea was to provide some feedback, but this doesn’t seem to really be the avenue for that.
Granted it’s been a while since I got into WoW as a brand new player, however I definitely remember being told that toons were locked to the server you create them on.
Obviously that may have changed, and also I read everything, including fine print. lol
You can always create another toon on a different server. We can have up to 50 toons.
It takes all of 10-12 hours to level up. Depending on how you do it, might be even faster.
Which may be one of the reasons CS is not overly enthusiastic about the problem. Plus of course it’s a holiday week and Blizz is on skeleton crew.
I have flagged this thread as spam, in case a moderator feels like deleting it. It doesn’t seem like this is an effective avenue for this.
I was told to move this thread here by a moderator, in order to possibly have my suggestion be seen in a way that developers could look at it. I was unfamiliar with the forum, so I just did what I was told. On review, this doesn’t seem relevant here or for the people who are actually seeing it.
I probably will not continue to monitor this- it has been flagged for removal.
Thank you for your responses.
Again, I was told to place this here by someone, under the idea that it might be seen by developers. I probably should have edited my initial post more and removed any of the parts about CS, because there was a seperate thread for the CS part.
It was never really meant to be a complaint, the complaint was already filed in the correct place. I’ve flagged the topic for removal.
