It was such an easy layup, but like Angel Reese, its a brick.
All they had to do is not add a made up race, use old races and not Disney-fy the concept.
The community has said it time and time again. We want Blood and Thunder, glory, and wardrums. Not Skyelves, smiling bears, and whimsy music. Putting Skyelves off the rip, really tells me they aren’t gonna keep to the classic feel.
Really put me off. They really shutdown private servers to ignore the community? But hey “WE HEAR THE COMMUNITY”.
Yeah the flower picking dwarf and wisp chasing bear was painful. I was expecting you to say high elves instead of sky elves though. Well high elves for Alliance and Blood Elves for Horde seemed like an easy win.
They know that by every logical thought in their minds that they need to recover the fans they alienated. So they’ll do it. They’ll make classic+. They’ll go clean from shop mounts for a week. Maybe even a month.
But then they consider new races. They remember the slop. They’re scratching their arms, beating their heads, maddened by the cravings. So they do it. They print out their void elf fanfic. They do another blue recolor. Its too late now. The art department already leaked the assets in the last retail build. It has to be released now.
Ion sits back from his chair in horror at what the team has done. Maybe this is it. Maybe they really won’t buy it anyway. The screen lights up with the final shop sales.
100 million dollars
It’s outsold the auction house dinosaur. He hears the phone ringing furiously. He knows that when he picks it up he’ll be met with congratulations from his superiors at Microsoft. The team delivered. Every time, they deliver.
Vanilla WoW was always viewed as “Disneyfied”. I remember playing other MMOs at the time when Vanilla came out and people would be like “nah I won’t play that cartoony game” when they talked about WoW.
Why not both? You know that’s how a lot of people met each other and got married in this game.
Are you a 13 year old boy and think contact with women over the internet will give you cooties, or are you a grown adult man?
In Warcraft 3, whenever a mortar team finished building they would shout MORTARRRRRR COMBAAAAAAAT
Throughout the RTS games, one of the voice barks from Orc peons was “werk werk”
The Frozen Throne had a side quest where you collected a bunch of sheep from the sewers of Dalaran and when you did it right, they went “bahhh rammmm eweeee” and unlocked a tower defense mission
Warcraft has always had silly elements, I think it’s hard for people to articulate it since it’s kind of a vibes thing. Sort of like the Cata quest overhauls where as, even though the pre-Cata quests had pop culture references it was a lot or subtle than post-Cata which were a lot more overt. I don’t anyone can honestly play the RTS games and vanilla WoW, then move over to modern, and claim they have the same vibes. The “Dark”, “Gritty”, and “Disneyfied” are all labels adopted by people who can’t articulate their points, but that doesn’t mean their points are lies/made up.
I loved the grim and brutal roots of all the poop quests, really mature adult stuff for adult gentlemen like myself unlike you 11 year old Discord kitten girls tips fedora
The term you are looking for is “heroic fantasy” which is what Warcraft has always been. It is the genre of the comic books and pulp fantasy novels that were Blizzard’s major inspirations. Yes, there would be dark bits, setbacks, some lurid elements. But the heroes would always win and the setting would always remain light.
Dragonflight over-balanced in the whimsy direction and I will agree that expansion was way too sweet. But TWW and Midnight have pulled it back to more of the previous balance. But the grim and gritty crowd generally also have aimless axes to grind about “blue hairs” or “millennials” or whatever other buzzword Asmongold put in their head. So they over-focus on the darker aspects of the previous expansion and ignore anything to the contrary. The result is this increasingly tiresome argument that Warcraft before was SERIOUS and MATURE while now its “Disneyfied”. Meanwhile, I just point to the TBC cinematic where a Tauren gets polymorphed and does the comical “blehhh” and swishy leg wiggle before falling to the ground.
