My best friend is joining me in game today and only wants to tank… but wants to start ay level 1 so he learns every aspect of the spec so when he gets to end game he actually knows what he is doing.
Here is the variable - He is ex military and had his keyboard hand basically blown up. He can still use it of course but he really needs a tank spec with the fewest macors/keybinds/hotkeys etc to really be effective.
Not looking for advice on mice or keyboards or footpads etc… Just looking for the best tank for him.
Thanks all!
Warrior that is all that needs to be said.

Paladin. Even my druid had minor moments to struggle, but my Paladin never fails.
- Lots of offense and defense
- Plenty of self heals
- An emergency full heal
- Two different “bubbles” to prevent all damage for 8 secs and 10 secs
- Steed to speed out of AoE and makes for emergency exits from a fight to reposition
- You can rezz the rest of the party when you finish soloing the fight
- Auras and Blessings make for amazing utility
- Class mount that comes with it
and the list goes on. If you want the easiest and most versatile tank in the game… Paladin is your answer. I love my little Earthen Dwarf tank.

People might say Druid but even with shift/mod macros it is a pain.
I agree with Protection Warrior. Big damage, straightforward and really good right now.

Currently, I would recommend druid tank. It is s-tier right now, and the controls are not spammy.
Prot warrior is also s-tier and relatively easy to play, but it has a lot of buttons that have to be pressed constantly.

He might want to look at the addon Gnome Sequencer. A lot of people with disabilities use it. It can bring down your entire rotation to just 3 or 4 button, or even just one if that’s your thing.

Biggest issue with Druid tank is while it’s core rotation is pretty simple being optimal in movement and making the most of its utility (e.g innervate, free regrowth heal to party). Whereas party interaction for warrior that is targetted is only intervene.
Other thing I’ve seen with new Bear players is literally moving around in dungeons (that don’t have mounting) in Bear form the whole way.
It really depends on the playstyle your friend enjoys. Any tank can be good in the right hands. Ignore the “min/max” nerds and just tell him to play whatever class he wants. At the end of the day, it’s about what will motivate him to keep playing. Not everyone enjoys the same thing, so it’s better to guide him based on his personal preferences. In the end, that’s what will keep him engaged and having fun.
There are different types of tanks that match various themes and playstyles:
- Druids are tanks with an affinity for nature. They can shapeshift into powerful forms and protect their allies using their connection to the wilds.
- Monks draw their strength from the forces of chi and spirit. They are agile tanks that use precise strikes and inner balance to deflect damage.
- Warriors are the classic tank archetype. Armed with heavy armor and a fierce determination, they absorb blows and lead the charge on the battlefield.
- Paladins are warriors of the Light. They are tanks that use holy powers to shield themselves and their allies from harm while smiting evil.
- Death Knights are servants of the plague. These dark tanks use necromantic magic and cold steel to hold their ground against enemies, drawing power from death itself.
- Demon Hunters are agile tanks who harness the power of the demons they hunt. They rely on quick reflexes and demonic abilities to withstand attacks.
Each of these classes has a unique flavor, so it’s important for your friend to pick based on what resonates with him. At the end of the day, that’s what will keep him playing and enjoying the game.

Warriors are the simplest. Anything else starts to add things.
I’d vote Bear , it has the benefit of switching it up if you want to help a friend by healing, or DPS as Boomer o cat

Warrior is just ridiculously strong right now, the simplicity of their kit is also excellent. At least this season, this is probably the best pick.

Right now Prot warrior is godking of tanks.
Easiest would be the tank takes the longest to die just by staying afk .
Bear would be hte first and monk would be the last.
If easiest you mean actively playing using your AM and CDs then that would be warrior cause it actually does something

This man knows his stuff.
Prot warrior right now = Work my limited DPS rotation for way more reward than work and then pay a lot of attention to one defensive and a bit to a few others. Bonus points if you ever bother to use spell reflect. You’re going above and beyond bro and I love you for it.
I think a new player does not have worry about being optimal too much.
Also, utility buttons are just once in a while, but warrior has so many core rotation buttons. So, they tends to be one of the top APM tanks.
Even for me, my hands get tired after tanking for a while as a warrior.
Although warrior is straightforward tank, which is good for new players, I probably wouldn’t recommend it to a physically impaired person unless they are up for the challenge.

Paladin and Divine Toll. Shotgun shield tossing is satisfying to watch especially if you have more than 5 targets surrounding you. Its like a blitz of light and shinies bouncing around.
Take a look around in Dornogol and see what color stands out the most, I will give ya a hint it is (Brown) protection warrior.
Now, granted that is subject to change at some point, but you can’t go wrong when Everyone is jumping on the protection warrior train to joy (until a nerf) then it’s all hands abandon ship.
Quad City DJ’s ride that train popped into my head, but then there is the Sound of Silence once change happens.
