Earthquake

I’m about 60 or so miles away to the west and didn’t feel anything… guess our bedrock is stronger…

I live about 70 miles north of NYC and my house literally shook and the room I was in swayed, freaking out the cats (and me to be honest).

The sound was like a large overloaded truck was driving by, shaking everything.

When I found out where the epicenter was, I was pretty surprised we’d feel it all the way up here as much as we did.

Felt it in CT. Think this is the second one we’ve had within 10 years?

Nothing felt in the DC area.

Moreso hearing about the coming eclipse than anything else, I’m not even sure we’re in the path for that either. Maybe the edge?

California checking in here. It was only a 4.8; you’re good :+1:t2::grin:

Felt it all the way out in south-eastern mass. Monitor and desk started shaking was like wtf then I felt the vibrations through the ground for about 15-20s.

We do have fault lines in the north east. Earthquakes are just rarer up here, but there have been 6.0-7.0 magnitude quakes in the last couple hundred years.

I was in the middle of the procedure with my team members. I felt the vibration, but no one believed me.

It wasn’t very strong, but I definitely felt it.

I saw that. You okay?

Not full totality but maybe you’ll see a partial.

I was near the epicenter of it and it startled me almost as much as Foxy after forgetting to check Pirate’s Cove

That’s pretty big for an area that doesnt get earthquakes and whose infrastructure isnt built to handle them.

Elemental shaman earthquake wouldn’t register on any scale. A loud muffler would shake your house more.

Well, as long as there isn’t a mushroom cloud attached to it.

(3rd strongest in the past 50 years for the region apparently)

The eastern half of the North American continent has been around longer than the western half in terms of plate tectonics which means the underlying mantel is much denser and this causes seismic waves to travel further. This means smaller earthquakes on the east coast are felt over much larger distances than say in California.

For those in to the nerdy details here is a great article from the U.S. Geological Survey:
