Earthen Appreciation Thread

I like these bouldudes and rockettes. Share what you enjoy (and what you would change) about playable Earthen!

What I like:

  • They clearly put a lot of time and attention into the lore of this more dwarf-adjacent style of Earthen (as compared to the ones in Uldaman/Ulduar/etc.), and as much as it just feels like “Dwarf but made of rock” for a lot of the design choices I feel the game was severely lacking in dwarf representation and assets, so that’s still a positive from me.
  • The unique start area is short but gives you a clear idea of what playing an earthen entails. Reawakening from stasis, worldsoul “corruption” giving you Azerite powers, and the choice of your past role as one of the many proverbial cogs in the machine. Classes getting unique choices really helps sell what their roles were (i.e. Priest/Monk being able to choose Caretaker, Warrior/Shaman being able to choose Stormrider, Mage/Shaman being able to choose Machine Speaker, etc.)

I would love if current races had something similar to help you delve into the fantasy for each. You’re not just a Troll Shaman, you’re a Witch Doctor. You’re not just a Draenei Paladin, you’re a Vindicator, etc. (Draenei heritage quest had a bit of that and it was really nice)

What I would change:

  • Customization-wise, I would add:
    • Hairstyles that aren’t just metal wire. Either sculpted stone (as the original earthen and Titan watchers have) or something like leafy green growth as I imagine the Freysworn would have. Imagine an earthen that looks half-grown-over with moss from having been inactive and left to the elements for decades.
    • Choice of not having the carved designs on your stony skin.
  • Not a big fan of the voices. My priest sounds kinda ridiculous going “HRRAAAGGH!” when she casts Renew or SW: Pain on somebody like it was an intense and furious exertion. The male earthen voice sounds kinda dopey and, if you’ll forgive the pun, stoned. Wish he sounded more like Baelgrim.
  • Edit: I’d make them not need to breathe and give a racial toggle to sink in water to walk on the bottom.

(Also I don’t like beards on fem-earthen/dwarves but that’s just me.)

I appreciate the fact that I do not like Earthen, however I plan on creating Mud People in my secret lab to fight against the rock people.

Thank you for appreciating me.

I like Dark Irons more, but nothing against the Earthen.

I like how they’re basically the most Titan-related race, and we can explore more Titan stuff through their perspective.

Especially how Titans might be more, well, evil than we thought.

Before TWW and DF, titans were seen as almost universally good.

Sargeras was the only ‘evil’ one.

I wouldn’t have described them as universally good so much as “greater good” aligned.

Remember how Algalon showed up in Ulduar to go, “This place is messed up, we have to wipe it clean”? He isn’t a Titan, of course, but he was acting under their protocols. To them, wiping all life from Azeroth and starting fresh would be a necessary evil compared to the risk of the Old Gods taking root and gaining full control of the World Soul, but to us that’s simply unfathomable as anything but the absolute last resort when there’s no other options left.

Side-note that most people aren’t aware of (myself included until recently):
People argue that the Titans want worlds of unthinking machines of stone and metal because “hurr order” when apparently the Titanforged races being made of stone was specifically to circumvent Old God control, and that planets seeded with life by the Titans aren’t populated by things like Earthen and Vrykul.

Double-side-note:
I really don’t like the book on Eonar planting that tree because it makes Aman’thul out to be another angry patriarch who has a fit whenever his orders are questioned, like Odyn. “THIS IS NOT ORDER” is such a stupid line and the premise of “Order magic” being its own thing is arguably dumber than Domination magic. “Just pour some Order juice into the water to make the dragons do what we want.”

It wasn’t until DF we found out they were corrupting dragon eggs, making proto-dragons (and elemental drakes) into the ones we have today.

I agree though, it’s always been kinda morally grey.

Moreso referring to the fact Y’sharrj got ripped out of the world, the Old Gods imprisoned, and Eonar planting the world trees, and creating the Wild Gods.

They have indeed done a lot of good, and it wasn’t until recently we’ve learned they were more obsessed with order (and potentially caging Azeroth in the process) rather than just being ‘good’.

Also, Draenor was being choked out by life (the Everbloom) and Titans intervened and make stone beings to fight it back, eventually becoming Orcs and Ogres.

They’ve done a lot ‘seeding’ our world(s) and making them more inhabitable.

Titans always seem to have failsafe devices (like in Uldum) that could erase all life at any moment, as with Algalon, if we became corrupted.

It seems the World Soul has priority over all mortal life, to the Titans.

They’d probably even kill it before seeing it fall to the Void or whatever.

i like the fact that they arent as bad as the dracthyr but not by much
:cherries:

I hope their racial active abilities get changed to be actually useful. Or at least fun. Otherwise I like my earthen paladin.

I just like them because they’re dwarves.
