Give me your universal idea for what new system could govern ground mounts. Similar to how dynamic flight revitalized flying, dynamic ground would change up … ground mounts.
Only one rule:
- Like dynamic flight, it must be universally applicable to all ground mounts (not sea mounts)
Let’s get creative!!

The way the horse controls work in Red Dead Redemption 2 is damn near perfect. It should work like that.
- Pull the reins: Pull the reins to the side in the direction you want to go. For example, pull right to go right and left to go left.
- Pull back: Pull back slightly toward your stomach to stop or slow down your horse.
- Match speed: Double tap and hold X or A to match a companion’s speed.
- Conserve stamina: Tap A or X and rhythm with your horse’s gallop to conserve stamina.
- Monitor health and stamina: Keep an eye on your horse’s health (heart) and stamina (lightning bolt) scores. Pushing your horse will deplete its stamina bar more quickly. If you don’t feed or rest your horse, its core will drain and it won’t have as much stamina or health.
- Strengthen your bond: Feed and clean your horse to strengthen your bond. As your bond grows, you’ll learn advanced maneuvers. For example, at level 2, you can rear your horse back by pressing R1 or RB with Square or X. At level 3, you can learn how to skip while sprinting by pressing R1 or RB.

Cut and pasted from a google search on “RDR2 Horse Controls”

(I am a keyboard jockey and type super super fast too though)
lmao, well, they did seem to take creative freedoms from GW2’s flying so I guess that counts
so because it has to have some form of universal application, how would the pull the reins physics work on a non-Equus ferus caballus mount?
Like flying, I think it would just have to be universal regardless of mount species. For some mounts, we will just have to use our imaginations I guess.
Maybe rename reigns to “control” or something.
Would Dynamic Ground Mounts even be worth the development time if Dynamic Flight is available from the get go from here on out? It would really only be utilized in dungeons. We don’t spend a whole lot of time on our ground mounts anymore.
I’d be down for a proper Nazjatar expansion with Dynamic Water Mounts tho.
yeah I think you’re on to something…the physics would have to be universally tied to something and the only things I can think of are weight and the speed by which it gains momentum which impacts turning capabilities etc.
I think something like that could be applied to ground mounts to give it more of a weighty feel. Someone on a tiger mount should have considerably less weight and therefore, more agility (speed/sharper movement) than someone on an elephant.

With how fast traversal from air is now, there’s little motivation to utilize ground mounts for transportation.
So the only point would be to add mounted combat elements into the game, but that would require a change to some core components to wow with how mob aggro and behavior works and I don’t see them monkeying around in those old core components of the game any time soon if ever.
Or they can introduce areas of the game that don’t have flying available for dynamic ground mounts to serve a purpose but with how the community responded to pathfinder, I don’t see that ever happening.

They just should have taken GW2 dynamic ground mounts when they took dynamic flying from them.

Base speed like normal mount speed, dash to move faster, a long jump like disengage but forward, and then a targeted jump like heroic leap.

Using the ground mounts in GW2 is just plain fun and with a speed boost ground mounts could become an option.

Different ground mounts should have different abilities.
Jump, speed boost, drifting could be possible at max speed. Momentum mechanics. Gain speed when going downhill, losing speed going uphill.
Water mounts should have speed boost, “jump out of water” like a flying fish. Maybe they could add some areas with “dynamic water” and these mounts would be able to overcome the currents or whirlpool.
Some mounts should water walk, others should climb walls (spiders etc)
Mechanical mounts should also do something goofy when you press a button.

Use the M&B Warband model, I would love to see people ride right off a cliff because the horse doesn’t stop on a dime without inertia.
I think the way that GW2 solved for this makes sense…they give the player the agency to decide how to traverse the landscape…the devs just build it.
Why shouldn’t the player be able to decide on how they want to navigate a canyon? Flying over it right now is really the only option… but what if we could use our watery bunny friend to hop over it?
Or use our magic carpet to blink across it?
or use our snail mounts to scale the edges of the cliffs at greater speed than normal mounted speeds?
or use our llamas to go cliff jumping till we scale it?
or use our otter friends to build an intricate bridge made of logs to cross the canyon?
or use our fiery steeds to build a fire sky bridge to traverse it?

Make it like the Palamutes from Monster Hunter Rise. (man, it’s hard to find a video that just… shows off the movement)
To try and adjust it into a WoW-compatible form, the fully-leveled tree might look something like this:
Active abilities:
- Mount Drifting: Slightly decrease your speed (-25%) and tighten your control for 1 second, then get an increase in speed (+45%) for 3 seconds
- Cliffscaling: In the presence steep surfaces that happen to be covered in vines, rocky outcroppings, or other non-smooth things, your mount can quickly scamper up them
- Springboard Dismount: Activate to launch off of your mount. Can be used after your mount jumps for an effective double-jump (for class abilities that mimic ground mounts, such as Druid’s Travel Form, they shift back to Humanoid form with a burst of magic energy propelling them)
- Swipe/Claw/Smack/Shock (species-dependent): A low-GCD, spammable, very short-range cleave attack that does very little damage (basically a means to clear mobs in legacy content without dismounting)
Passive abilities:
- Loyal Companion: After using Springboard Dismount, your mount remains on the field and attempts to remain close to you for up to 5 seconds before despawning. Trying to mount again while they’re in range will allow you to swiftly re-mount them (0.5 seconds instead of 1.5 seconds)
- Versatile Saddle: You can mine, gather, and skin without dismounting (without any profession perks). You can also loot and interact with a majority of quest-related items without dismounting (same as shapeshifted Druids)
- Tactile Rider: You can use most buffing and healing consumables (potions, bandages, flasks, whetstones, food) without dismounting
The thing I’m sort of aiming for with the idea is to give them some utility that makes farming legacy content faster, while also giving them some utilities that could make them more usable for short-range travel in the world.
Did you just mix up otters and beavers?
