Now that we have a core system for gliding in place for dynamic flight, why not take the next step just a little bit further.
I know it was leaked that dynamic ground mounts are on the way, but in the mean time to get some new “dynamic movement” systems in place that might be a bit easier to finish, why not make it so the various “glide” effects, such as engineering tinkers, items, and demon hunter wings, used the same momentum physics as dynamic flight, but without the abilities and action bar swap.
Just a little thing to make the movement of the gliders feel a bit nicer and more rewarding when used from high up mountains or buildings
That’s pretty insane, imo. Flying is one thing. There’s tons of space for that. Ground dynamic would be like a bullet train and you’d never be able to steer along winding paths.
Depends how they implemented it I guess. Maybe just special skills for different mounts. Maybe cat mounts can jump further. Maybe wolves are faster in certain environments. Maybe some type of creature suited to living in caves or whatever is chill with us riding it in dungeons. We kinda got that in AQ40.
If they made them work like the Palamutes in Monster Hunter Rise (ie, you can drift on a dog, and be able to interact with everything without dismounting) it might be okay, but I don’t want to imagine what a nightmare it would be to implement things like automatically and smoothly hopping over rocks and up small ledges with WoW’s engine.
It doesn’t have to be just speed based. For example, GW2’s ground mounts do a whole host of different things. One is based on going super fast and has a sort of drifting mechanic, one can jump high, one can jump far, another can teleport, one can go over water and hover up a little (also goes underwater), one is basically a lumbering siege weapon where people can copilot and break down barriers.
I am all in favour of getting interesting ground mounts in WoW.
Until you realize that giving a whole bunch of mounts different platforming abilities will lead to them making even worse jumping puzzles to find world treasures.
“Want to finish this achievement? You’ll need this mount, and that mount, and that mount, all of which are rare drops from rare spawns by the way…”
Remember, the extra speed of dragon riding wasn’t a gift. They designed the zones to be much larger specifically to offset that and maintain the status quo. Any “buff” we receive is going to be rendered null one way or another.
I can not wait to hop on my Goblin, then have my Goblin hop on his Rat mount and go running through the sky. I want to roll up on other players on their pretty mounts, riding a rat, wearing a top hat, and just wave.
None of that seems bad. I do not mind the larger zones, and I like the puzzles that utilise the different mounts in GW2. Skyriding was a huge win across the board for me, as I had long been asking the other mmos I play to bring in mounts more like that GW2 has.
The map would have to be designed specifically for it. Like with dyamnic flying you just need a big space but for ground mounts you gotta have a space just for that.
But if done right it would be a lot of fun.
Like the Roller Beetle from GW2.
I think i would prefer dynamic ground mounts for just cruising and having fun. Especially if it has physics and you get air from running off ramps or hitting an incline
I expect they will do the same thing with WoW’s dynamic ground mounts that they did with the dynamic flying mounts:
Take the scattered systems for the different mounts that GW2 has and combine them into a single streamlined style.
WoW’s dynamic flying takes properties of the skyscale and griffon from gw2 for example and combines them into one streamlined and, honestly, more fun flying style.
So expect a mix of all the more interesting ground mounts in gw2. Momentum for sloped terrain, drifting, a boost, special jump properties, etc.
If the new skyriding tree can be used as an indication, maybe the ability to pick between a vertical or horizontal jump, similar to picking the whirling surge vs stormrider version
There’s no reason they couldn’t exist simultaneously. I could see it being a very niche use scenario and mainly used for races (like GW2s roller beetle)
