Dyeing armor in WoW

I believe it should be implemented, as many other MMOs already do it. Eso, Guild Wars 2, FFXIV … ect

To be fair, 24 year olde MMOs have this feature that has been asked for since closed beta.

This is obviously something they will eventually do. Probably sell it on the store (customizable armor transmogs).

My understanding is they can’t w/o reworking how the items are coded or designed.

I understand the frustration, some items just look good together and would look even better if you could coordinate the right shades of red or blue.

It is not like they are incapable of doing that in the future.

Couldn’t they just make a variety of dyes for us to collect instead?

That is exactly what I was thinking.

I want to be able to dye the Claw-Fringe Mantle with other colors!

I am sure they can, they did it in Diablo 3 and I was a big fan of it. I just don’t know how much labor is involved and if they view it worth the investment to rework every item.

I think it is worth the investment. Many players have wanted it for years.

It doesn’t technically have to be all armor, it can be trading post items and non raid and pvp gear.

If the list is kept small it’s possible, I honestly think they should at least go for dye system for trading post items and start there.

Wear your outland party colors armor with pride

Yeah I’d like to see it be done

And yeah it’s a ton of work to do if they ever get around to do so

I’m thankful for transmog at least

Since this was revived, it can’t be done with how items are designed in WoW. Each item is painted as a single piece. They don’t have anything sectioned out to be recolored with dyes. That’s just how it works and it would take a large rework (likely massive) to change that.

D3 had that built into the item creation process, WoW did not. Since each item and recolor are painted by hand, it would be a monumental undertaking to redo thousands (maybe tens of thousands?) if various items and recolors. That’s not even taking into account how much effort it would take to overhaul the entire item design process.

Damn that is something

Wife “How was work dear, did you get a lot done today ?”

Maybe A.I. can one day solve the issue

Modern game design has made it easier to add things like layers, masks, or colorable parts to items. This means they could add recoloring without having to redo every item from scratch. Plus, WoW’s item design has already moved toward more flexible, modular methods, so a dye system could be added over time without needing a complete overhaul of everything.

Blizzard has already done big reworks, like the world redesign in Cataclysm, where they updated entire zones and systems. So, adding a recolor system, while a big job, is definitely something they could handle in stages instead of all at once. Blizzard has also set up teams to work on big new features, like player housing, which shows they can take on ambitious projects without having to redo everything from the ground up.

After seeing dyes added to our future housing as options, I would expect that there is a chance that gear in midnight and beyond could have dyes added to it. I wouldn’t expect it for older assets.

Adding dyes to older gear in WoW is actually more doable and beneficial than it sounds. It would give players—whether they’re new or old—way more options to customize their gear, even from older expansions, raids, or quests. Plus, a lot of these older items are nostalgic for players, so giving them the ability to change up the colors would make those items feel fresh and encourage people to revisit older content.
The technology today makes this a lot easier than when those items were first made. They wouldn’t need to redo everything from scratch. Instead, they can use templates and automated tools to quickly identify which parts can be dyed. They could even roll this out bit by bit, starting with the most iconic gear.

I would not be upset if this happened. If they can do all the housing things why not this?

AI isn’t necessarily needed to add a dye system to World of Warcraft. The process of adding dyes to gear is pretty straightforward, especially with the tools and technology today. Using AI would introduce unnecessary complexity, requiring extra time for training, fine-tuning, and fixing mistakes. Blizzard already has efficient workflows in place for this kind of work, and AI might even risk misinterpreting the design intent behind certain items. In short, AI adds more work without offering significant benefits for this task.

Why’d you necro this thread?
The obvious answer is that Blizzard gets too much mileage out of recolours.

Why does it bother you that I “necro” it? It’s something I’ve wanted since Classic. I stumbled upon a thread that I found interesting. Why is that bad? There is no rule saying I can’t comment on old posts. If there is I was not aware.
