Dwarven Shaman

Hello everyone,

I’m really enjoying this Race/Class combo. I’m currently playing an Enhancement Dwarf Shaman and it just feels right to me in terms of theme, animations and such. I RP that he’s a Wildhammer Dwarf Gryphon Rider and “rune” warrior of sorts.

I may be overthinking things, but I often feel concerned that people perceive Dwarf shaman as “lore-breaking”–in the sense that they were just shoe-horned in without much context. I get that, at the end of the day, it’s my character and I should play what I want, but it doesn’t feel immersive to me if I play a combo that most people would perceive as not abiding to general lore.

Just wanted to get opinions. What do you think–is this a “safe” race/class combo that fits well within the lore? Thank you in advance!

Ngl, I like the DnD approach: any race can be any class. The only big stretch is like… forsaken druids, but hell, now we have drust they can spring board off!

Fight me, I want gnome druids.

In an attempt to heal Gnomeregan, they follow in the footsteps of Freya, rather than Mimiron. Then, they build power-rangers-esque animal mechs and hop into them. Awesome.

Tbh, you’re RPing the exact, canonical fantasy of a dwarf shaman. Like, Blizzard put them in there so you could be lightning-blasting, hammer-throwing, Wildhammer, gryphon rider.

Shamans are as diverse as priests, because they’re essentially spiritual guides who also work with the elements. It’s more about how you play them than what you’re playing.

Dwarves have a deep respect for their heritage and ancestors, like most shaman. All of them have a deep respect for the earth, and then Bronzebeards likely care a lot about water (in the form of ice), Dark Irons care about fire, and Wildhammers care about air (the element from which lightning is derived).

So, focus on one element, rather than all of them. Otherwise, I was trying to come up with difference between like an orc shaman and a dwarf shaman, and it’s just aesthetic. Fundamentally, they are wisemen who care about the ancestors and elements, who occasionally act as warriors. Orcs just do it with more spikes, and the dwarves might do it drunk.

Bronzebeard Shamans are lore friendly since the formation of the council of 3 hammers, there has been effort to unite the 3 dwarven clans, and as such, Shaman trainers from the wildhammer have teaching the bronzebeard dwarves for some years now.

But from what i understand, most people RP as a wildhammer dwarf shaman, and the good news is, shadowlands will add some wildhammer customization options.

Since WoW restricts classes to some races, i don’t see much potential in “against type”, not from the playable races. Maybe gnome and goblin warriors since they would lack the physical strenght that warriors have, or maybe specific specializations, like Holy Priest Void Elf or Shadow Priest LFD. I would argue Night Elf Priest isn’t that great either, since the moveset is too focused on the holy light or void magic, and that doesn’t fit Kaldorei religion.

Unlike Druids who have been consumed in the eternal darkness that is nelf lore, Shamans can fill a variety of roles.

In general i’m for any race class combo being allowed, but some having a far greater presence in certain races then others, and NPCs not being restricted to the class system. Use classes as a way to flavor your character by nabbing abilities that should work for them, not make your character restricted by their class. Wildhammer dwarfs use lightning and air magic a lot, so Shaman is right up their ally.

Feels more complete with Gryphons.

In a BlizzCon 2019 interview, Ion Hazzikostas joked that stewards are actually gnome druids in Moonkin Form

That’d be perfect. New head canon.

Might be kinda canon if Magnus returns with a Steward form but that is mostly chances.
