I just came back from a break, and I’m race changing some of my characters away from human (they were almost all human from when I played hardcore). Now that I’m playing casually, I want to have different races to enjoy and really get to understand the lore of the game.
With that being said, I want a Dwarf character that uses the heritage armor specifically. As of right now, it’s either a warrior or warlock. Here’s my dilemma - I’m envisioning using the 7th legion armor set on my warrior which has me leaning staying human. Yes, I know warrior would make the most sense from a lore perspective for a Dwarf.
The alternative is the Dwarf plate-wearing, heritage armor donning Warlock. From a lore perspective, how does this make sense? From a looks perspective, would this be goofy looking? I tend to dislike the demonic gear sets from Warlock, so I figured this could get me around that.
"The Dwarves dug too greedily and too deep. You know what they awoke in the darkness of Khazad-dum… shadow and flame…"
Pleenty of ways a Dwarf, especially an Azerothian Dwarf could encounter demons or the fel. Dwarves are not unknown to form pacts other entities. There’s Dwarven void cultists. There’s Dwarven paladins. Dwarven shamans. The whole Dark Iron story is about how they served this terrible elemental lord.
The reasons can be just as varied.
Maybe the dwarf just wanted to avoid a death while bleeding out alone in the darkness and made the deal with the first thing that came across.
Or they can be seeking out the power they feel they need to assist in a long term plot. A desire for wealth, influence, revenge, or maybe something nobler.
Maybe they were a warrior at some point fighting the Legion, and got captured/and or exposed to a major dose of Fel. Now it’s just part of him now that he’s trying to get a handle on it.
Maybe they’re just your classic member of the Cult of the Damned or some other group that’s allied with the Legion, but they don’t want people to know and they’re doing the common sense thing of not walking around draped in tattered robes, demon skulls and fel flames that would be a dead giveaway.

Thanks! This is really helpful.
What are your thoughts on the heritage set on a Warlock?
I think a Warlock is defined more by their abilities than the armor they wear- as I think what characters wear should honestly change in accordance with the situation and the character you’re playing. There’s no reason why a guy in armor can’t go around slinging curses and flames and summoning demons.
And as far as I know, the Dwarven heritage armor set doesn’t reflect membership in any specific magical/martial tradition so much as it’s just ceremonial armor of the Bronzebeard clan, which I’m sure has included individuals from all walks of life.
First a good amount of details might be in order. Do you plan on playing a dark iron warlock or a bronzebeard warlock? If dark iron there is a myriad of old and great lore on the dark powers and classes dark irons used in the days of old. If your a bronzebeard the warlock class is more limited on its acceptance and how it attained its knowledge. The goblin did give some good examples but don’t forget some others.
A mixed heritage dwarf like Moria’s son could have a father in a darker clan should you choose bronzebeard. Dwarves can be several centuries old, so even lore that humans couldn’t be around for a dwarf could conceivably have been alive to see. Inquire if you need more details I’m a bit rusty…

If you read up on the history of Grim Batol, there were dwarves in there doing all manner of dark magic.
Being that it was ~250 years before the events of Vanilla WoW, it wouldn’t play directly into what we know as the Warlock class today, but the dwarven Sorcerers in there were definitely up to no good. It wouldn’t be a stretch to think that many of them were practicing Warlocky magic and that this knowledge was disseminated throughout the other dwarf clans over time.
EDIT: As for the armor, it stands to reason that the Dark Iron would design even cloth armor to have an aesthetic similar to what looks like plate for other races. It’s just their style.

Honestly I feel like most alliance warlocks generally wouldn’t go around advertising their affinity for the darker arts, so the platey looking armor could be seen as a way to fit in & hide in plain sight without raising suspicion, if you were inclined to go that route.

I personally try to keep my warlocks gear at kind of a minimum but I do have a few chunkier, plate-looking pieces just to pay homage to the part of dwarfdom that loves metals and smithing. I’ve got bulky boots metal boots and girdle on this guy to fill that purpose. I think that a dark iron warlock in some of the heritage armor would look pretty cool if you’re going for sort of a battle-lock/battle-mage aesthetic. Really lean into the militaristic nature of the dark irons. It could definitely work.
There’s no reason to… it’s especially appropriate on dwarves, gnomes, and even void elves.
