During what expansion did M+ see its peak?

What was the best expansion for M+?

I dont mean when most people played it, but when it was the most fun to play?

To me I think it was actually shadowlands, perhaps all seasons except S2.
The dungeon pool, to me anyways, were some of the best, since WotLK and maybe legion. I think i enjoyed all SL dungeons except maybe ToP, tho that grew on me too.
Then the affixes, well, Prideful and Encrypted were brilliant, such play making potential, routing options etc.
And S3 or S4 (i forget what was last) when Blizz introduced old dungeons reveamped, was simply awesome! Even tho Kara umm upper or lower was the only non 20+ i had thru xpac, it was still good fun with all its miseries.

so thats my take, whats yours?

Gonna add notes:

  • influenced by players own experience
  • Numbers Vs Pct of playerbase doing m+ content is a factor.
  • Fun for a player could lead them to rate it high vs Balance

For me I think I’m weighing it up between Shadowlands Season 4 and DF Season 3/4. Shadowlands Season 4 had a lot of healer power both in terms of healing throughout and damage. While most classes still had ā€˜BiS’ legendary powers the ability to swap covenants and legendarys felt nice.

My goodness Kyrian Resto Shaman with permanent Earthquake on Earth Elemental IMO was chefs kiss (plus tier set that gave us chain heals on totems <3).

I miss wielding that kinda power.

DF Season 3 did have Vengeance DH as the dominant tank, but largely thanks to raid trinkets it wasn’t a bad time to be another tank either.

BFA’s last season with the obelisk skip affix i remember felt really nice to play through. With the dungeon familiarity, azerite so high, the start of them fixing problem affixes and corruptions letting people build there characters; bosses where tuned well, trash had some massive aoe pulls, and the main problem mandatory rogue skip had been solved.

SL after they fixed the tank/kite problem was good too, but i liked BFAs mechanical dungeon design better.

The highest season I remember was BFA after corruptions. People were running dungeons like crazy because the obelisks got rid of invis/shroud routing and twilight devastation took away a lot of dps checking.

Honestly, Legion

It was new and this whole culture around it was in infancy. And I played it a lot.

I’ve done exactly one mythic+2 for TWW

Best season: TWW season 1
Worst season: TWW season 1

Because it’s the only season I’ve actually played.

Dragonflight for sure

BFA season 4 was very fun because BFA dungeons were great and the seasonal affix was awesome, plus I was a bear tank at the time with twilight dev

But i’m not sure it could every be peak with every season being the same dungeons. The rotating dungeons was such a huge deal.

In that case I’de go with DF season 3 because it felt like the most ā€œcompleteā€ season where everything just kind of made sense. Except DF added aug which killed the vibe a ton and made healing the blood pressure pills role it is today.

Legion was a mess and TWW just sucks

So all and all, Shadowlands? :face_with_monocle:

Dragonflight season 3 was a lot of fun imo.

8.3.0 BFA Season 4 (& Post Season)

BFA dungeons felt like they were designed around Mythic Plus. Corruption & azerite traits changed the meta every hotfix. Even filthy casuals were doing high keys for fun.

Legion layouts felt like they weren’t confident the feature would take off & kept old design while slapping M+ ruleset upon the dungeon.

Shadowlands biggest problem was it tanked the playerbase; which affected M+ as a whole. The dungeons were actually pretty good but tying design/skips to covenants made the meta even more convoluted.

Dragonflight was very repetitive, had a small dungeon pool at start. The community had splintered at this point. People had become annoyed with how important M+ became. I think that is what led to Delves, head cannon theory tho.

DF Season 3 for me, personally. I got my rsham, rdruid, and hpal to 3K all through pugging, and hit top 100 hpal in NA at 3335 which was a bit over my personal goal of 3300. Hpal mana sustain and damage was awful, so every timed key felt even more sweeter.

I really liked the dungeon pool. The music, the aesthetics of the dungeons. They were fun to me. Everbloom, Throne, Black Rook Hold, Waycrest Manor all had cool vibes (Thicket is kinda a dump tho xD ) I thought the new Dragonflight dungeons were also epic, although Murozond’s rise had too much RP in it and a bit too much navigation, but it was still unique and interesting. I really liked the epic dragon fights at the end in Galakrond’s Fall and Murozond’s Rise.

Also, as a healer, I had fun with the voodoo totem trinket from Atal’dazar. I found it to be very underrated and I enjoyed being creative with it.

At this point, I am mostly done with mythic+ but I will always remember DF S3 fondly.

I’ve played m+ in every expansion since its release apart from TWW because I abandoned the game mode entirely.

By far the most fun time in m+ out of all of that was legion and it wasn’t even close. The reasons are simply because back then when it was first released they slapped it on dungeons that were still all designed in the old way they used to design them before m+ was a thing.

By that I mean they were not jam packed with mobs every few feet, they didn’t have a bunch of annoying mechanics to deal with and most important of all many of the legion dungeons were very short and quick to beat so even doing +15 or higher keys only took about 20 minutes or so to complete some a bit longer.

These days every dungeon is designed from the get go with m+ in mind so they are much worse and more annoying.

Dragonflight season 3. That was the season I got keystone master because the bosses were difficult but fair in high keys (aka, if you did the mechanics and were generally a good player you’d do well), and things made sense. Everything was doable, tanking was fun, healing was fun, and DPS could do what DPS did best. Plus, the dungeons weren’t horrific either. I mean, there was that one gnoll dungeon that everyone avoided like the plague but the others were pretty nice.

Overall, I think it’s the most positive part about Shadowlands. The seasonal affixes were still good and changed things up, I liked the dungeon pool for the most part.

As an Enhancement Shaman, though, most of Dragonflight. We may be ā€œbetterā€ now but the play style Enh has in DF made it my favorite as a result.

I have enjoyed M+ every season, including the one we’re in. I’m a glass half-full kind of guy. My funnest moment may have been in Legion, with unlimited bolstering, when we somehow made a seagull boss with 50 million health. Was in discord with friends group and we laughed so hard… Good times.:upside_down_face:
