The dungeons are fun, engaging and have enough depth of game play to stand alone without affixes. Everytime we have to wait for hot fixes for quaking or deal with some other affix related bug. Popping explosive and moving out of saugine isn’t interesting.
The infinite scaling aspect of m+ is enough to keep the challenge. Please remove affixes.
That would be the single best change to M+. No more affixes, just fun dungeons that you can enjoy at fair power every week, no need to wait a week to make your score look like you aren’t 5 levels lower. No dead weeks where you’re listing a group for an hour and 0 healers apply because the affixes are trash.
If affixes stop existing, that means everyone’s least favorite affixes stop existing. You hate explosive? Good for you, no more explosive. You hate spiteful? Good for you, no more spiteful.
Affixes are all annoying. There isn’t a single affix that makes the dungeon more “fun” this season. There are some affixes that get certain classes invited like priests on bursting because we can cheat with mass dispel, but most priests probably don’t enjoy being relevant for only 2 out of every 12 weeks.
Instead, buff weak classes daily. You have WCL, simulationcraft, subcreation, drustvar, etc etc doing all the work for you, just iterate on their work.
What if you like mobs that don’t die when you fart in their direction but hate affixes? Nobody ever removes gear as part of their gameplay, stop suggesting that. The people who would do that aren’t interested in this genre. This is a progressive game, but increasing challenge via removing gear is regression. The rewards don’t increase, not that you would be using them if they did, and people will leave your group when they see you in 163 ilvl.
I understand where the take comes from but it’s just not fun and that’s really the only thing that matters in a game.
This is going to devolve into the same M+ purists, terrified of change, saying that people who suggest changes don’t belong in THEIR M+ and lashing out with the same insults.
They fully admit M+ is the only thing keeping Retail playable, I think that’s why they’re so terrified of change. One wrong move and you destroy whats left of the playable part of the game lmaooooo. Great game you have there.
If you want something static, go raid. It’s not a bad take. Affixes keep M+ from going stale. Without them, even if some are annoying, would be too easy. They would have to bump up scaling even more to account for it. We all know people struggle with the scaling as is because “mechanics iz hard.”
It depends on what you mean by fun, I guess. Not everything in a game is meant to be fun, or rather, fun isn’t ‘extracted’ from every individual part of a game. It isn’t fun to spend 10 minutes on Raszageth, but it is fun to do the mechanics in that time, to do my rotation, to watch people new to the fight do the “Oh hell” shuffle forgetting which quadrant of the platform they need to stand on.
I think people complicate what ‘fun’ is. Almost every genre of game relies on obstacles to provide a reason to interact with what’s fun. And to that end, I really don’t think most of the affixes are a problem. Spiteful would, in normal circumstances, give plenty of reason to drop cap totem at more opportune moments rather than just to passively reduce damage. It gives me plenty of reason to press Thunderstorm more often.
Tyrannical and Fortified are pointless modifiers in a vacuum, but when you start thinking about what damage profile you want for a run, it can become a bit more interesting. If anything, I’d just like to see weekly rotations removed, and have affixes be per key.
Unfortunately, that will never happen. MDI relies on the consistency.
Why are you posting about MDI? Do you care about it? Do you have some stake in it?? So annoying to even see it be posted by a regular, unknown player. This is part of the problem, the irony lmao.
I agree that “fun” is a multivariate function. However, as someone who has actually tried just doing M0s with lower gear, there is no fun to be extracted from anywhere. The difficulty of “a 20 without affixes” can be replicated with the inverse of a 4.8x multiplier on your gear. This is because the scaling of a 20 is 480%. So let’s say you reduce your power by 4.8x, or multiply your ilvl by 5/19. That’s fine until you find out that a 107 ilvl puts you at about 70k health and almost everything will kill you. There is no rotation to be done, there is no counterplay. It’s not fun.
Not that it can’t be done, because the rest of the group can carry you, and someone can probably solo it if they’re geared enough. Of course, this is all assuming you can even fill a group with 70k health.
I did, but I can elaborate. MDI incentivizes Blizzard to design M+ in a specific way. That includes consistency, both between two separate keys, and between two separate groups.
The reason MDI incentivizes Blizzard in this way, if you’re wondering, is because it drives engagement. It’s hard for someone like me to quantify how much, outside of conjecture involving viewership and the influence of the meta that spawns out of MDI, but it does have an effect.
You can have a week at the end of the season to see how it goes. Sure, a few more people get the keystone achieve but that isn’t a big deal. Actually, allowing more people to get the achievement would make people more engaged.
Hell, you can turn off the timer for that week too.
