Dungeon meta

Were dungeons in classic ever able to be done by 5 rogues? 5 S&B tanks?
2 off healers?, ect ect ect.
All the dungeons seem to be is healer/tank/dps/dps/dps.
I thought dungeons were suppose to be more challenging and less spam chain fest. And with a huge variety of group combinations possible?

Was this ever a thing or is it just easier/faster/safer to go with the meta?

Typically you need someone who can take the hits and someone to heal. Bosses like Emp in BRD can hit very hard and even a rogue in full t1 will die to him with a healer on him since he will take big hits.

Tank/healer/dps/dps/dps was definitely the standard back then. You could do other stuff, including stealth groups with rogues and druids, but it was not the norm.

If anything, options have opened up in classic because the playerbase is better and can do things like spellcleave groups and 2h tanks.

I always advise to make your own group if you want a specific experience. I want nothing to do with this cleave garbage, so I always whisper specific classes to make a group comp I will enjoy. I want to heal. I want a tank. I want a mix of dps. That’s what I enjoy and that’s what provides the best mmorpg experience for me.

The holy trinity of 1 tank 1 healer and 3 dps works perfectly for the vast majority of dungeon runs. But there are situations where it makes sense to mix it up a bit as well. Mainly in situations where the group is severely undergeared/leveled or when the group is severely overgeared or leveled.

When the group is overkill for the dungeon and damage will be minimal, 4 dps and 1 healer makes sense. But if the group is going somewhere they really shouldn’t be, bringing 2 healers can be ideal.

Story time! Last week when I was 41, I did an uldaman run with level 41-42s and we full cleared the place. For Archaedas, the holy dps priest went into healer mode to serve as a mana battery for the warlock on add duty. 13 minutes later, we killed the boss. And it would only have been possible with 2 healers.

I was farming SM for quite a while and joined alot pug groups. The noticeable one is of course 3 mages + tank + healer comp. I also joined a group of 3 dps warriors who rotate tanking, a priest and me (dps + off heal). Lastly, we 4 manned Cath with 2 ret pallies, a rogue and a priest. End of the day it is all about working together and know how to play your class well.

Players aren’t better. Patch 1.12 made it easier. People didn’t know this because they were 60 and weren’t trying to optimize dungeon strats.

Thats also very limiting. Like for hybrid players who dont spec 30+ into one tree. I cant make a dps/heal priest hybrid, because then in dungeons I will be gimped as the only main healer?
Saying you are dps/off heals in non shadow form isnt going to get you in any normal groups.

Same goes for any class. Unless you know people doing something similar and can augment your playstyle. That selection seems to be non-existent especially in /4 channel. Or can hybrid builds function just as effective with regular 30+ talent players?

Thats awesome! But I dont think thats very common?

Hence why you make the group. You don’t need to ‘get into any group’ if you make it yourself. And fyi, you can heal just fine in dps spec.

no clue, we usually used normal compositions when we did dungeons when I had my vanilla warlock. 3 dps a healer and a tank. We never tried to do anything like that because we wanted to succeed heh. So ya, I never did, at the very least. I saw a shaman tanking in an sfk run I did, that was pretty neat.

What does meta mean.
I have been playing a long time and haven’t heard this before

Yeah it is not common but there are times we couldn’t find anyone. So we just grab whichever class is available and go. And sometimes one person in the group will just rage quit/dc so we just continue, and most of the time we finished our 4 man runs successfully.

From what ive been told over the years classic was always a bit more “free form” with how you did content. This gets stricter as you near 60 and beyond.

Early dungeons can be done with pretty much anyone. Hybrids with “tanking” abilities worked. Not so much after level 25 though.

My guild has a rogue that used to tank for us on other servers. We would run rogue/3dps/healer for a lot of 5 mans. A little too early to do it now with his current gear but by phase two we’ll probably start doing it again.

BM hunter and enh sham is a pretty good dual tank combo.

You need a tank, and you need a healer. Everything else is based on who you can actually bring to the party.

And they were little kids who had no idea what they were doing.

Also with the Demoralizing Shout threat multiplier it’s just absurdly easier to bring a warrior tank and 2 AoE dps. #nOcHaNgEs

I was 15/16 back then. I had no idea what I was doing.
