Question about dungeons I’ve thought about tanking, I’ve played DPS and Healer in dungeons my question is supposed to lead party? The tank or group leader? And are there any good addons for dungeons so you don’t get lost and know the routes? In healing and DPS I always just tried to keep up with group and have gotten separated and lost at times
Tank.
I’ve never been in a dungeon where someone besides the tank lead. Even when running with a raid leader that wasn’t tanking, the tank lead.
With randoms, its best for tank to lead/pull. With friends, it does not matter.
Tank is by default the group leader. Usually.
I defer to the one who knows the dungeon more than me. Usually a tank or healer.
Honestly, with the new ping system anyone can effectively lead without saying a word.
I am switch from healer to dps and usually when I notice the tank is lost I whisper and ask if he needs help and ping where he has to go and what to pull. 9/10 times everyone just follows the ping.
I look at it as I’m playing an RTS with advanced (most times) AI and it becomes its own little mini game.
My question is do you plan to start tanking at max or are you going to level a new character up.
Both can be done but leveling a new character is probably the easier route to learning how to tank.
Tank is pretty much always the leader though you will occasionally find someone that self designates themselves as the leader especially in low level content.
Dungeons are pretty self-explanatory and if you’ve done them as the other classes, you should have a general idea of what is expected.
Good tanking practices are this- pull steadily, if a pack is about to die move on to the next one, try to never have nothing to do. DO NOT chase the dps if the dps pulls more let them bring it to you, do not chase them.
It’s okay if a dps pulls extra and brings it to you if you live, if you die you know who to blame. You should still tank it if the dps is bringing it to you, but never chase them. (This just causes more problems; steady pace forward is the name of the game.
This is the right answer, OP. If you aren’t sure and you’re the tank, just be polite and let the group know. Once you’ve got it down pat, you’re good.
Don’t default to ‘tank as lead’ because its not required, especially as a new tank. Once you got the dungeon(s) down, feel free to lead on, tank brother!
It’s not required, but it IS expected.
So, as you said, if you’re tanking a dungeon you aren’t familiar with, it’s probably best to say so right at the start rather than staying silent and, say, taking a few extra seconds to decide what to pull or what path to take since you haven’t done it before. That kind of idle time isn’t a huge deal in non-M+ dungeons but it will annoy some people if there hasn’t been a reason given for it.
I guess my point is just that “who is leading” isn’t generally a question that’s posed in any given group. It is assumed to be the tank. In most cases, you can kind of just go forward and keep pulling and it’ll be fine even if you don’t really know the place, but you don’t want to create a situation where everyone else is expecting you to be leading while you’re expecting one of them to tell you where to go.
While I don’t disagree with your observation, I would prefer everyone to know the dungeon, I do no matter what role I’m playing.
But you’re probably right that people do assume the tank is supposed to lead.
Solid advice all around.
