Think about it. Who can actually even dual wield 1H swords now:
Warriors - And they shouldn’t
Monks - you can’t even see them (and 2H often the better choice)
Rogues - worst spec of three options currently (and even then dagger OH?)
Demonhunters - Glaives are the go to tho
Frost DKs - Whether they should depends on the xpac and patch
It seems odd that such a fantasy staple has basically been phased out of game nearly completely over the years. It’s disappointing how dumbed down weapon usage has become as the game has gotten older, all in the name of “balance”, which is simply an alternative way of saying “devs taking easy road”.
To be fair, when I say “shouldn’t” I mean in terms of optimal dps. I’m all for doing “what I want” when it means it’s sub-optimal as long as it’s not completely garbage. I think too much of this game ends up being “optimize every tenth of a percent!”. Good enough is often good enough. But this is part of that optimization sacrifice, weapon options.
I think most classes, especially melee ones, should simply be able to use all weapon types, and dw or 2h. If it’s not perfectly balanced, who cares.
I’m not sure this is accurate. Having a 1 hander in each hand gives you x2 enchants and x2 weapon oils/stones. I think it is just optimally better unless a 2 handed weapon has a cantrip effect on it.
As for the rest, I agree, there should be options for players to use whichever weapons they want. Glyphs, transmogging 1 hand over 2 hand (in the case of fury warrior) etc.
I would like to play rogue more often, but I hate that you’re restricted to daggers. It is kind of boring after awhile and hard to match weapons to some t-mogs. It seems very restrictive. And a good t-mog is what the game is about, let’s be real.
Right now WOW is kind of this awkward balance of both feet on either side of the line, and not in the best way. Ridiculous transmogs, but limited armor and weapon transmog options. Restrictions on equipping items, yet looking like a clown.
We are either traditional fantasy RP or we are fortnite. Currently Blizz is trying to have it both ways. And it’s detrimental.
Well, Pandora’s box is open and there’s no going back. Bright, colorful, bordering on silly, transmogs are just part of the game now.
For those who like more traditional fantasy looks and appearances, we still have that available to us.
I’m all for more customization and transmogging though. Things like weapons on your back or at your sides should be options too. Character expression is a big part of the game and after 20 years, there’s no real reason for Blizzard to dictate to us how our character looks/dresses.
It’s more about the principle, really. Very few characters right now I would guess dual wield actual 1h sword items. The original restrictions on weapon equipping were based on ensuring classes that needed items got them. But for this case, AGI 1H swords, it’s what, monk/rogue/DH, right? That’s it.
The need for restrictions is no longer there, is my point. Shamans and hunters could use 1H swords (and hunters could DW like they used to, for that matter), Unholy DKs could dw, DH could even use 2H agi, correct me if I’m wrong, but 2H agi Swords are literally only the domain of surv hunters, right?
The point is that the original intent of the restrictions is hardly even relevant.
