I’m currently sitting at level 29 getting super hyped about our travel form at level 30. I vaguely recall reading or hearing some comparison about when should one mount up (at 40) or stay in travel form. So I took to excel and wanted to share my findings with the community.
If we assume a base travel speed of speed “1”, then travel form has a speed of “1.4” and mount speed has “1.5” (40% and 50% increase, respectively). I interpret this to mean, “1.4 units of travel per second”. If we write equations to describe travel distance:
Travel Form: d = 1.4 * t; “t” being time, in seconds
Mount Form: d = 1.5 (3 - t); “3-t” subtracts the 3 second cast time. I have to ignore the “negative” distance values we get prior to 3 seconds.
Using Excel’s Solver function, I evaluate the minimum value of the Travel Form equation using variable “t” but constrained the answer to “must equal mount form equation output”.
I got 45 seconds and a distance of 63 “units of distance”. This means that at exactly 45 seconds after the start of the race, the mount form will have traveled the same distance as travel form, and then will begin covering more distance as time continues.
Has anyone tested this? Any ridicule, criticism, or negative comments are welcomed and encouraged.
Also, hello fellow druids!
dumb comment but wouldn’t mount be at 1.6? not 1.5?
aw crap. Maybe. I’ll check and pull a Garmin if that’s the case.
around 9:22, Kargoz goes over this

Yep. Good catch, Caladbolg!
RECALCULATING…
…
…
It is now 24 seconds, which is much more reasonable.
I thought 45 seconds seemed an awful long
I remember seeing something about this before.
Along the lines of if where you need to go is a certain distance away than travel form would be best but if it’s like a minute or more away your mount is faster.
Ok yes thank you this is definitely where I got it from.
I think it’s 50% speed boost from Travel form, 60% from mount?
I noticed that if a mage uses Blink off cooldown, they are Almost as fast as a hunter with Cheetah (without the daze), and a druid will pull ahead drastically.
One more factor, mounts can benefit from Carrot on a Stick and cheetah form cannot.

Yep! That’s the video I watched…months ago. What he said is confirmed; within a few seconds at least.
Is there…maybe a steak on a stick to entice my cheetah to run faster?
As a bovine, probably should not use a steak. Fish-on-stick?
Great point, 3 buffs in total that stack, Boot spikes crafted from blacksmiths add 4% i think.
Riding glove enchant add 2%
And the Carrot trinket (which you WILL forget to swap out one day), is 3.5%?
The numbers sound small, but you feel a difference even just from one, from all 3 combined you are Mario Andretti babies.
There is a console command that will show your speed, and was a vanilla addon that made a speedometer guage (available in retail), hopefully the developer or someone will quick fix it for classic.
I’ve seen this tested multiple times. It’s 21 seconds. After 21 seconds it becomes better to use your mount than travel form. 21 seconds is half of an average sized zone, roughly.
Mount speed is 1.6 though.
Hunter is 30%, Druid is 40%, lvl 40 mount is 60%
Interesting thread to see on the forums this morning… last night I made the decision to take my lvl 40 mount money (72g) and hold onto it to apply to the 900g i need for my lvl 60 mount. So i will be travel forming it all the way to 60
If i was any other class that lvl 40 mount would have been a must have
I’m curious why I am getting 24 seconds, then? Something I am not considering, all else being equal (no buffs, nothing on sticks, etc.) but what?
Edit: my bad it was 24 seconds. I don’t know why 21 is stuck in my head, jeeze…
It’s just there for some reason…21… like it overshadows all the other 20 somethings… maybe it’s the many ways 21 is a significant number.
Even in the video it is said to be 21 to 22 seconds, not that a few seconds matter but it is odd.
I don’t think that the time difference aligning with the legal age to vote in the United States is a coincidence…
Regardless, now we have mathematical proof of the claims (just make sure we change that 1.5 to 1.6). What more from life could we want?
How much does it cost to trail travel form
yes mounts are faster than travel form dummy
Lol, double post - sorry. Used the wrong numbers earlier.
There’s an easier way to calculate this. Mounts are 14.2% faster than travel form (1.6/1.4). Mounts have a 3 second cast time. How far do you need to travel for the cast time to be worth it? 3/.142 gives 21.1 seconds.
