Hello all!
So, I’m a big nerd and I’m trying to relearn this game, and rogues scratch that efficiency itch if you will, over analyzing and making quick plays that win games.
Running off to the left just right and placing a smoke bomb at the top of the ramp just right as a mage ice blocks to give more time to counter the enemy healer’s trinket life swap.
I’m this kind of rogue nerd.
Now this being said, I am in search of maybe anyone knows of the Drop combat timer from last hit, similar to leasing or chaining, in classic, I think.
However the reason I ask is that as above I’ve been finding myself having a really hard time dropping combat lately to the point that it makes going for a re-stealth almost pointless and a HARD waste of time, which it never should be that, I am going to attempt to get some footage soon for testing but YO!
Early the other day before I took off towards work I went for a re-stealth in that Mogu Orb BG on the corner opposite from the action to get a stealth and get multi cheaps and garrote silences on the casters, but spent the better part of almost 20 seconds standing doing nothing but ADHD stutter stepping.
Also side note; THESE WORM VOID THINGS FROM SHADOW PRIEST… They gotta go, they are hitting me from like 1000 years in the future, because they are so far away, they’ve time traveled, and I’ve got a map sized snare on me keeping me in combat. lol
Anyway,
TLDR; What’s drop combat timer, and stupid bugs keeping rogues from re-stealthing. There truly is nothing new under the (digital) sun.

It is “supposed” to be 6 seconds but:
- lots of splash damage can occur from various classes
- depends if a healer / target has things such as procs that keep them in combat
- team mates don’t mind their kits or use common sense when you just blinded or sapped a target.
- depending on hero trees a class picks can influence stuff. (Goes back to knowing what kit does what which is a game knowledge point)
- The artifact cloak proc can keep people or yourself in combat (the arcane hit effect).(s3 current)
It is all situational though and requires a little more finesse which is perfectly fine and reasonable. It is irritating but at least damage thresholds were also added to cc to not break as often back in dragonflight - the war within prepatch iirc.
Abilities that can/maydrop combat that you can be sneaky about if you are fast and paying attention:
- restoration druid treants
- emerald communion when the preservation evoker slips into the dream
- watching a monk teleport 2x (mist weaver when they teleport in a stun - a pvp talent i dont remember the name of)
- If people don’t attack a shadow priest when they disperse
- Shaman using burrow as they are invulnerable underground like a dugtrio
- targets who mage icewall off dont always strike the wall so they can be opportunistically sapped
- dh’s during netherwalk can be cc’d but cannot attack until it is gone, you can use that time to sap them if you are slick
- Hunter’s hitting feign death auto drop combat, you can sap them to get those hobos off the floor
- night elves’s who are cheeky with shadowmeld can be sapped
- Holy priest’s who aren’t mindful of their guardian angel / kyrian / spirit of the redeemer who you smoke bombed can be sapped
- Holy priests who fly up in the air like marry poppins sometimes drop combat if they are afk making cereal or a lasagna
- People who try to pillar too much and use various los far too often trying to be cute.
- you can kick someone and stop attacking them and then blind and they may drop combat to be sapped as well. (Tight window and depends on class but doable).
If people do not pay attention to you after CC’ing you , you can(really tight window and isn’t guaranteed just like the above)
- restealth while rooted, after fear, trapped by hunters, sleep walked by evokers, polymorphed, hexed and you los for a moment by shaman, cyclone from any druid being applied to you multiple times.
Hope some of these make sense or help a little bit man. We just have to adapt and be really sharp.

there is no actual way to predict breaking combat with addons or scripts… if there was, i would have figured it out decades ago. you pretty much have to have muscle memory and a inner time in your head to do this. there is no other way. and if you were to write this insane script… it would bog your combat down so badly that you’d disconnect from wow… because ive tried it and it overwhelms the game and disconnects you. lol
however, you can use some addons to alert you when combat breaks
or you can write a weak auras script that alerts you to combat break.
you can also write weak auras scripts to show you when target is out of combat or in combat.
thus, thats all you can really do. the rest is skill and awareness.

Just change your weakauras to load only in combat. When your rtb buff or other things you track disappear, youve dropped combat.
Anyways, shadow priests are notorious for keeping combat for mutliple reasons. They steal health from allies and drag them into combat.
Aoe healing from allies can put you in combat.
Procs of energy if youre assassination used to keep in combat.
Damage procs from your cloak will cause it.
Download unitincombat addon. It doesnt show timer but it will show sap icon on player head if they drop combat. So you know who to sap even in mid fight if they drop combat. Shadowstep sap them if they not in range. And make Marco Sap with /stop attack /clear target / stealth and spam when you run away.

And with the base BlizZard UI you can enable text on screen that shows you what is happening (eg entering stealth,) and drag the stealth icon near the center of your screen and enlarge now for greater visibility.
Also the best way to drop combat from bugged damage is to increase distance with Sprint and gliders.
