I’ve been having much more frequent driver crashes and timeouts “Display driver amdwddmg stopped responding and has successfully recovered” with 7900 XTX.
It seems much more frequent now then before, and It happens very often in M+.
It does happen sometimes in raid but much less frequently, seems that M+ or megadungeon is way more.
I’ve reinstalled windows, turned off freesync, updated BIOS, and none of that has worked.
I don’t experience these timeouts in any other games…just WoW .
Any solution coming to this blizz? I literally built this PC specficially to play WoW with no lag (7900XTX, 7800X3D CPU, 32 GB DDR5 6000MHZ ram), and im stuck with these frequent crashes and driver restarts.
Given that you reinstalled Windows to 0 change indicates a much deeper possibly system level issue. The best course of action I can recommend is to submit a ticket to our support with some system files (Instructions for those in the ticket submission form.) You can do this by clicking your name at the top right of this page, choosing support, then choosing contact support. Follow the instructions, attach the files and one of our technical agents can dig into this with you.
AMD stopped using MPO (again) quite a while ago. I want to say either earlier this year or last year. You can run that regedit change and DXDIAG will still report 3 planes. So either the drivers aren’t using the planes or they ignore the registry changes or both.
The more likely culprit is they need to check and undo any BIOS overclocking(RAM overclocking like XMP/EXPO, APE/other performance enhancers that a lot of motherboards have that auto default on that override the power level timings of CPUs), cap their FPS in game and make absolutely sure there are no other programs running in the background that have hardware acceleration turned on.
Within the task manager, you can right click one of the column labels to bring up a menu and add “GPU engine” to the columns. If you see anything other than WoW, desktop window manager, client server runtime process, adrenalin and maybe windows explorer: Go into the program and check all of the options to disable “use gpu acceleration,” “hardware acceleration,” and other things like that that imply using the GPU. If they don’t have an option for it, close/terminate them.
Also make sure you’re not running any other programs like browsers, steam/epicgames, discord, mouse/keyboard softwares, rgb stuff, etc.
All that being said, I’ve had a few abnormal driver crashes the past few days in other games and that’s with the latest 23.8.2 drivers, so it could just be some jank with the drivers. (actually, I just checked and there’s a new 23.9.1 driver out as of this morning)
I RMAd my 7900 XTX back to the manufacturer, and they gave me a new GPU. Today I ran halls of infusion and AMD Driver crashed, game froze on the first boss of halls. during his power surge ability. Its getting frustrating all these crashes happen almost exlusively in dungeons
Also having the same issue for the past few months. Now with 10.7 anytime I’m in Valdrakken or doing any raid boss or aoe trash pull I get horrible screen tear/stuttering. Attempts to fix this include:
Uninstall/reinstall windows 11
uninstall/reinstall wow
roll back amd drivers to 23.5.2 (23.9.1 is current drivers)
disable all addons
turn most graphic setting down or off
disabling MPO
completely closing other programs (discord, overwolf, curseforge, wallpaper engine)
bios flash
temps are not overheating on cpu or gpu
Only change that has happened in the last week is 10.7
Ryzen 7 7700X
AMD 7900 XTX
32GB RAM
2TB SSD
Running on Samsung Odyssey G9 (5120x1440)
No other games have this issue
In summary Blizzard needs to roll back whatever they did in 10.7 from a technical standpoint
Blizz laughing at us, saying its our fault. I built the best gaming PC money can buy specifically to play WoW and all i get is crashes and driver timeouts, I cant even run a single M+ dungeon without crashing
There is something odd about that first boss in Halls of Infusion. I ran it today and during power surge my video card temp skyrocketed. Then after power surge it went back to normal; I don’t have an AMD GPU, mine is a RTX 3060Ti. Was normal the whole rest of the dungeon.
I am having the same problem as the OP and I dont believe its anything to do with my PC’s system. My computer functions perfectly in every other respect - this issue is ONLY happening in Wow and always either in dungeons or in other high level activity.
It only happens in dungeons and almost always during a hectic fight.
When I check the Tech forum I see many other people reporting issues with AMD cards, especially the 7000 series (of which mine is one).
So either this is an issue for WoW to investigate (and it has only been happening fairly recently) or it is an issue with AMD. And yes, I’ve tried things like updated the drivers and it has had no improving effect.
I can only suggest that people report this to AMD every time it happens. Its only by doing that we might see some improvement. And perhaps the WoW techs could check and see if there is anything they have done that might be triggering this.
If it isn’t fixed very soon I will be getting rid of this card and switching to Nvidia because I’m almost beyond frustrated.
I recommend downloading a program called “Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU)” from Guru3d. Then restart your pc in safemode, launch DDU, select AMD and run the uninstaller and reboot normally when it’s finished. It will completely remove any remnants of previous GPU drivers. After your PC has rebooted, download and install the latest GPU driver from AMD. Anyone with Nvidia, select the Nvidia option when running DDU.
I upgraded from a 5700XT to a 7900Xt and have had the issue described from the OP. It happens in dungeons at least once every play session (4 or 5 keys). I found this folder C:\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft_retail_\GPUCache and deleted the files in that folder. I ran 5 keys today without any issues. I don’t know if one thing has to do with the other, but it might be worth a shot.
I have nothing to add for solutions, but I too built a PC specifically to play WoW, with a Ryzen 7800X3D and an AMD 7900XTX. Like everyone else I get the same GPU crash in M+ during large pulls or important boss fights. It happens so often guild members are beginning to avoid grouping with me because as a tank I’m always responsible for at least 1 wipe per dungeon when the PC crashes. I hope a solution is found soon.
I recently upgraded to a 7900 XTX with a 7800X3D I have only had one driver failure.
Since then I have not had any issues; all I have changed is I don’t run with raytracing on and I am getting around 95FPS in valdraken and I was getting over 300 FPS in uldum legacy of tyr and In brakenhide i was capping 160 FPS ( limited to 160 after seeing 300 FPS in uldum.

I don’t have much to add, other than to be another voice for the same exact issue. Frequent driver timeouts, most frequent in M+, sometimes a few hours apart, sometimes 3-4 in one dungeon. Tried everything under the sun on all these threads.

I’m selling the 7900xt and buying an Nvidia card. I don’t necessarily think that its actually an AMD issue per say - I have never had a single crash in any other game and the 7900xt has been awesome. But something is not right modern AMD cards ↔ WoW
i’ve been having this issue too. with my previous 6900 xt and now not one but TWO 7900 xt’s. i sent my orginally 7900 xt back for another thinking it was the fault. hell, i actually bought my first 7900 xt initially because i thought my 6900 xt was faulty and gave me an excuse to upgrade.
it happens in both dx11 and dx12. its super annoying. i can play 10 hours straight of starfield, for days on end with no issue. same with bf2042. but wow retail and classic? nope. sometimes i can go 6 hours without a tdr. others ill have three tdr’s in a single hour.
they all recover of course but super duper annoying.
i have mine paired with a intel 13900k. 1000 watt corsair rmx power supply. 13900k set to intel’s tdp spec so its not overclocked or unlimited power consumption.
Yeah it’s weird. I only crash in wow. I can play any other game maxxed out all day long i’ve never had 1 crash that wasn’t wow. I have tried absolutely everything and it just keeps happening. sometimes twice a key. sometimes once a day. sometimes ill go a day without a crash. 7900xtx
I’m considering selling mine too. I play this game the most and it sucks because i prefer the drivers and all the cool features the AMD Stuff has but its just become too annoying at this point. might sell it and get a 4080
