Drakthyr Classes -- Strange Implementation

So the new Drakthyr classes… they are pretending you were always those classes before you took a 20,000 year nap? This flies in face all all established lore that Drakthyr were learning from mortals how to do things Neltharion never taught them. Also why were Drakthyr summoning demons 10k before the burning legion even knew azeroth existed. Or wielding shadow magic when it was before Neltharion had even fallen?

It also contractics their own patch notes:

…Worst of all? It undermines their core themes as bioweapons learning to people.

This is more of an rp and gameplay not always meshing. Interestingly Danuser probably said it best:

If you use Wildhammer tattoos, are you part of that clan? Seeing how you start in a Bronzebeard starting experience.

  • It’s complex - can’t make a starting experience for every subset, it would consume so many resources.

  • You have the freedom in your mind to roleplay your character how you like. You get to decide how you want your character to be.

But they did make a custom starting experience, it just… makes little sense.

From what I recall, not ALL Dracthyr are Evokers. In fact, only a very elite few are Evokers. So, what are the rest? Civilian classes? I think it’s always been presumed that the Dracthyr counted other classes among their ranks. Mages, Warriors, Rogues, Hunters, etc… some like Priest or Warlock might’ve been a bit odd given the time skip, but then again, the Dracthyr include the Bronze Flight’s powers amongst their toolkit, so I think it can be handwaved as timey-wimey nonsense.

As for learning from other societies, I’d consider that to be more of a matter of catching up to what the world is at today, kind of like how the Highborne coming out of isolation in Cataclysm were so hilariously outdated in their knowledge of modern magic that Blood Elves in Azshara were countering their magic with absurd ease.

The idea that a Dracthyr Warrior from 10,000 years ago has been training since being awoken to learn modern combat tactics and disciplines isn’t far fetched to me. I mean, would a Dracthyr Hunter even know a rifle exists, for example? How long would it take for them to get used to those?

That’s how I choose to view this, ‘they’re learning from other cultures,’ tidbit: they’re catching up to everyone else.

Yes, theyre stated as to always being those classes and i dont think itnis the most crazy thing in the world. Theyre the most basic classes and the army was always more than just evokers- it just wasnt ever explored.

Side note: Lightwarden are priests and Shikari are hunters. Havnt seen others yet.

Let’s be honest here, this is entirely just caving to a request that was probably coming from a board room. There’s no sense to it.

Every dracthyr NPC described as “not an evoker” in DF was using draconic abilities that players can only get from the evoker spell list. It’s always been a weak excuse. Functionally they’re still evokers in terms of what class they pull from, even if they don’t have powers of all flights.

To be clear, the Doomlords used to be servants of the Titans and are inherently attracted to instances of sacrificial magic and rituals, and we still lack a history of Zandalari Demoniacs but one can presume it was during the “golden age” aka the ten thousand years of pan-continental troll dino utopia pre-Elf

Likewise Shadra for example always used Shadow magic, the Black Empire was a thing to be studied post Ordering, etc

That is fair. Though, I still am not fond of this sort of weird slapdash approach they took instead of just doing what they said they were going to do all along. It also completely flies int he face of how Neltharion operated. The Drakthyr were supposed to be regimented soldiers who use dragon magics. That was their whole thing. They were bioroids. Warrior and perhaps mage sure… but these should be Drakthyr who have been learning the last couple of years from other cultures and bringing that knowledge back home.

But, I appear to be alone in that assessment, so… I will just go grump in my corner I guess.

but also remember that the Black Dragons were imbued with Azeroth’s elemental powers and tying to the land itself, which inherently had Old God shenanigans, ergo the Black Dragon Corruption problem

imo both and is good

Dracthyr can join each culture’s spoopy groups (KT Tidesages, Orc Shadowmoon, Zanda Demoniacs, SW Slaughtered Lamb, etc) but also it would make sense for Ebonhorn to revive/maintain a “dark arts research group” of sorts, while he himself would incorporate mortal knowledge therein

After all, the Bloodtotem have rejoined Highmountain, warlocks included

FWIW I fully agree and I think a bunch of people on the evoker board as well. I prefer to simply assume that the class change is preemptively done because the mechanics of changing class mid story is a problem.

Like even if they skip the intro questline it’s unlikely that they’re going to also skip the cutscene that introduces dracthyr to the faction capitals as it’s kind of important since it’s the quest that unlocks visage.

Or Blizzard just funnels all non-Evoker Dracthyr into the Ogre Island starter experience, like other races, such as Worgen, Pandaren, or Goblins can do.

I dread that idea, honestly. I’m already planing to go through DF on another dracthyr to see which quests they forgot to flag for Dracthyr as a race rather than evokers and the idea of not getting an intro that’s for the race rather than the class specifically just feels stupid and yet another sacrifice of the dragon fantasy for no gain.

It also doesn’t fit for dracthyr, who aren’t a core part of the factions, they’re a neutral race sent to Org and SW as part of an embassy from two of the black princes. Running them through the faction pride overdose that is Exile’s Reach makes no sense.

There are definitely some bugs, earlier in testing I threw myself from a height and the tutorial tooltip popped up and suggested I use Living Flame to heal.

…on a mage.

I guess there is a lot of deep level code hooks to fix that presume dracthyr and evoker are one and the same.

It’s amazing what you can cauterize with a bit of fire magic!

:smiling_imp: Warlocks

Demons existed long before the Burning Legion was founded.
Part of the reason why Sargeras was formerly tasked in wiping them out, and later on Aggramar too.

They were spread throughout the cosmos, but saturated in areas close to the most chaotic regions of the twisting nether — and many of them sought out worlds that had high volumes of magic, as it would send ripples into the nether and attract a few hungry beings intelligent or lucky enough to slip through reality and make it into said-worlds.

That being said, there could’ve been a demon or few that peaked upon Azeroth before the Legion was founded — They just wouldn’t had known it possessed a world soul and would’ve most likely been self-serving or bound to another who had the knowledge of how to commune or form such a contract. :person_shrugging:

:crossed_swords: :hocho: :bow_and_arrow: Warriors, Rogues and Hunters

Given these are pretty basic classes who’s practices have been around a very long time – It’s not really too far fetched. They had them amongst the titanforged and Neltharion being elevated by the titans – would had known about such techniques of these classes, thus having him implement them into his creation of the Dracthyr isn’t too mind boggling either.

:magic_wand: Mage

I mean evokers use a lot of arcane magic — You could argue the magi of the Dracthyr ranks are more heavily focussed into the depths of magic and didn’t hold the potential for the abilities the evokers did & thus poured their efforts into learning the secrets of the arcane to use to their best ability :person_shrugging:

:star2: Priests

The light predates the Legion, and arguably even the titans.

That being said, the titans using order-magics to utilise the light into a weapon they could use effectively against the old gods & the minions, armies and allies of the Black Empire would’ve been well known — So Neltharion encouraging such bonds with the force to be utilised amongst his soldiers would also had been understandable :person_shrugging:

:dracthyr_blob_dance_animated: Ultimately and overall? :dracthyr_blob_dance_animated:

I feel that these classes specifically – are actually the safest lore-wise to use for spreading further class options upon Dracthyr. :dracthyr_nod:

I approve 10 / 10

I think most of the classes are generic enough that any civilization would have employed them. Warlocks are the only one that requires more speculation, but it isn’t unheard of. They could also be like a Gilnean Harvest Witch situation and lorewise you learn more about summoning after being freed.

I’m surprised no Shaman though given the elemental theme. I would have guessed Druids too with the Emerald Dream. Both sets of magic feel like something Deathwing would have also dabbled with.

Wowhead has an article on the non Evoker, Dracthyr class intro.

The other classes are established as Warlocks being Felologists, Mages being Thaumaturges, Rogues as Stalkers, and the warriors are just warriors.

I think its important to note they are in fact full members of the factions, which is again reconfirmed in this new intro for these new combos.

Somenof these names probably couldve been workshopped some more, but overall i like it!

I see both sides for sure. On one hand, it feels like they should’ve just skipped any non-Evoker Dracthyr to Org/SW like an allied race without doing the Forgotten Reach intro and maybe given a little blurb about learning from mortals or w/e, but it also seems like a waste to only have Evoker’s see that part of the Dracthyr experience.

Neltharion being the ‘Earth Warder’ makes me cranky that they can’t be Shaman though, so I hope there is room in the grump corner!

It is a weird implementation for sure, but in this case kinda works.

The earthen though felt weirder, there is a whole contingent of new earthen being taught by alliance and horde, which made me think that was going to be their starting experience, so I made my monk only to realize you start in the awakening chamber, already on your class, no explanation given on the moveset you have, and then you go to your faction capital where they introduce us to DF, which happened prior to we awakening… Talk about confusing.
