Nothing is more boring than a game that isn’t engaging. I know for myself flying used to be boring as hell traveling long routes between zones and world quests. Staring at a screen while not doing anything is a snooze-fest. Alt-tabbing to keep occupied for me has on occasion resulted in myself often overshooting my flight and having to waste time backtracking.
I find that Dragonriding keeps me engaged and is actually much faster if you are doing it right. Getting as much height as you can, swooping down, leveling out and hitting more speed makes flying fun.
Yes it takes some time to practice but let’s keep in mind that this is going to get even better has we unlock more Dragonriding skills as we level. Give it a fair chance everyone.
When flying was 1st introduced in BC it was pure convenience but now it’s actually fun to do because I have buttons to press and it’s faster travel making it more convenient. This is a total win in game design.
I’m open to the thought of it growing on me, so far it has really slowed me down! There have been moments where I saw it’s potential, so holding judgement
DR manages to kill my engagement and interest just as much as turning flight off for Pathfinder did.
I pick specific mounts for every character I’ve made. They are an integral part of that character’s identity. My characters rarely use dragon mounts (at least, live ones, which I think the dragonflights might have an issue with…). This character’s an engineer. His gyrocopter is handmade. It has value from that experience that a preassigned mount would never have. My gyrocopter is gimped and on a shelf, just as it was in the beginning of Shadowlands. I was not happy about it then and I’m not happy about it now.
In this RPG that has the barest of RPG elements as it is, the devs taking over or throwing out what few choices we are able to make for ourselves is frustrating. Mechanically, DR is fine, though I’m clearly not as enamored with going super-fast as others. Conceptually, I hate being put into a box again so we’re all forced to use the same gimmick.
Getting rid of dragon riding isn’t the solution to this though. The solution is to introduce dragonride-like mechanics to old world mounts. And hey, maybe mounts can have different flavors in how they fly?
I don’t have any desire to start micro-managing my gyrocopter after 16 years, thanks.
The solution is to offer both forms of flight on day one.
There’s nothing I’ve seen so far in DF that would be broken with dragon riding or for those who prefer it if normal flight were turned on today. Races, speediness, all that, still there for those who wish to partake and not for those who choose to use another mount for a time.
My biggest problem with dragonriding is that I play a character that can literally turn into a bird. Why should I have to ride on the back of a dragon?
AT LEAST give me the option to use flight form with dragonriding mechanics.
Right now this feels like some random side-game that one of the devs came up with that is being forced on us.
This is a good idea, because the insect mounts would actually fly like flying used to be, x,y,x system with no real physics for those that like that.
Also for the motion sickness, can I just see a video of what’s going on to make the person motion sick, like how much are they spinning and how long are they flying, most flights for me are quick and short definitely not long enough to cause me motion sickness on a 1 minute car ride.
Dragonriding really changed the extent we can go with these. We can have these jet-like mounts like drakes who fly as they currently do. We can have helicopter-like flight with robot or gyro mounts we have. We can have something in the middle. They can have their own flavors and their own perks with their animations. Maybe the helicopter ones can hover?
