Dragonflight Lore - Everything Known So Far

The Great Sundering called forth the Dragonflights of Azeroth to give their aid to the world, scattered into pieces, and take leave of their home lands to a world that cried out for their personal support, protection and guidance.

They entrusted their ancestral home, the Dragon Isles, to The Watchers, where one such atop the tower of Tyrhold, deactivated the beacon of the Dragon Isles to suppress the magic of the lands and conceal it from all, including the Dragons of Azeroth.

For 10,000 years the land laid dormant in a deep slumber, where the world of Azeroth’s healing finally gave no further need of the Dragonflights’ more personal involvement, away from home.

The security of Azeroth awakens one of the remaining Watchers, perhaps the only one left, on the Dragon Isles, who lights the Beacon of Tyrhold. The beacon empowers the land once more, unveiling it from the concealment paved by it’s slumber, where it’s call beckons the Dragonflights back home.

The Dragons have finally returned to uphold the role that was given to them long ago by the Titans that gifted them their power. Once more they take back their seat as the guardians of Azeroth and her watchful protectors.

But a new threat, an old and ancient enemy, has returned.

New Race: Dracthyr

10,000 years ago, the Dracthyr were an experimentally created race by Neltharion, who came to be known as Deathwing. It was the project to create the perfect soldier that combined the powers of all five dragonflights into one. He had formed, as the Earthwarder, a training grounds prepared for his creations known as the Forbidden Reach.

This act by Neltharion was in response to the growing rift between the Primalists, a faction of massive Proto-Drakes that chose not to side with the Titans upon Galakrond’s defeat, remaining on the Dragon Isles. They followed Galakrond’s philosophy that all should be subservient to Dragonkind for their great power.

This created a rift between them and the Dragon Aspects who followed the philosophy that the lesser races need their guidance and support. Neltharion, concerned with this ever-growing rift, sought to create a means of countering it, merging both Dragon and a selection of lesser races, to create the Dracthyr.

This project of the Dracthyr was left dormant and abandoned due to the aftermath of a terrible battle, a battle that resulted in the sundering of the world. The island, left in concealment without the Beacon of Tyrhold to light the way, could no longer be found and the Dracthyr were subsequentially forgotten.

For 10,000 years they have been left in dormancy in the finality of their creation on the Dragon Isles. But the return of an ancient enemy has opened their eyes to the revealing of the world and they begin to explore the land before them upon the Dragon Isles.

Along the way they learn of their innate abilities and natural skills as they tread the Dragon Isles from which their creation was borne, having to learn who they are and find where they stand in the world of Azeroth.

Facing the choice of who they will favour, the Alliance, or the Horde, the Dracthyr must also inevitably face the reality of their origins, and the cataclysmic history that followed after their creation.

It’s interesting to note that the Dracthyr will be joining one side or the other due to them making a pragmatic choice, not an idealistic choice. Though even as a die hard long term Hordie I really don’t know what we can offer that the Alliance can’t. They have more resources, manpower, money, connections, etc.

Just wanted thoughts on this cause I’m trying to reserve a name but do you think dracthyr will follow the same naming convention as the dragonflights do? Are there chromatic Dragonflight naming conventions?

Yeah, that makes sense, on that note, I wonder how most rpers feel about this, gonna be somewhat odd to have such powerful characters from a lore sense, on top of the fact that the majority of the population (including probably IC) have very little to no interaction with dragons, except maybe aside from deathwing.

Well, I know my character from a RP perspective will probably be cautious but after facing down literally death itself, seeing dragon people for the first time will probably result in a Meh, I’ve seen worse. and than he’ll go about his business doing worgen things :wolf: :stuck_out_tongue:

I think the Dracthyr are interesting but i’m afraid of them getting the Pandaren treatment post Dragonflight which is the reason i don’t like “neutral” races.

Well at the very least their story is going to be tied to the aspects so anything involving them past dragonflight might involve dracthyr as well. In addition total fan theory but it would be so cool if they made a side story with the dracthyr and pandaren, kinda being taught how to find their own way in the world.

Did it bother anyone else that in the Cinematic they referred to the World as an “it” instead of Azeroth?

True fair point, On the note of dracthyr I do wonder how they will be perceived by the other flights? Or if the aspects are even aware of or remember their existence? And lore wise just cause im unsure is Neltharion corrupted at the point of making them or no? I would assume not but still. Like were they made just before the sundering or like way before other mortal races and just kept hush hush.

As I’ve just updated the original post in doing some further research on this, they were created before he was corrupted. In fact their creation was of a benefactor nature initially. Whether it was only Neltharion that was aware to them or if the other Dragonflights knew is still to be revealed.

I theorise upon the return of the Dragonflights, something perhaps occurs (or doesn’t) and or either way they end up remembering about the Dracthyrs’ presence on the isles and ultimately go out to find them and reawaken them.

I imagine neither of the above because that would be rather presumptious to take on the name of their betters. I suspect that they will have their own naming conventions.
