Dragonflight is a Top 3 expansion that made everyone quit

I didn’t think it was possible but DF is actually a good expansion.

Gearing has never been better for PvE and PvP.

QoL is at an all time high, dragon riding is cool and the treadmill type grinds are no longer mandatory.

Some people even say it’s a top 3 expansion.

Despite all of this, DF has the lowest M+ participation out of any previous expansion, has the lowest PvP participation out of any other expansion and in general has very little players logging in and almost no buzz or hype on social media.

How exactly can an expansion be this good but also be so deserted at the same time?

It’s the healing changes they suck. I mean, I will come back push out my 20s for the teleports with friends at the end of the season and be done.

I’m gonna go ahead and say it, no expansion will beat BFA when it comes to M+. I’ve stopped waiting for it and just expect worse content going forward and I have been right so far. Would love for Blizzard to prove me wrong.

Has healing been as fun since legion or BFA?

No, but I think a lot of that is because tanks aren’t very tanky. I like healing DPS but having to watch a tank nonstop gets tiring.

I also preferred how strong healers were in Legion in ratio to the damage going out, minus s4 of legion, where blizzard didn’t scale keys and it became cheesy. So, considering this, the current damage going out in keys is fine. And makes it fun to play from a DPS perspective, but us healers lack the ability to top off quickly like we use to. Thats what we need.

This is one of the best expansions IMO. I am a casual player and in this expansion, for the first time since classic, I have played ranked PvP (had to have that druid mog), raided and done some mythic plus. I’ve not done that for ages. The dragon riding is so fun and immersive. Nearly all the classes and specs are fun (some could use some work) and I absolutely love the new take they have on adding customization for characters.

I think the only tiff I have is that macros break when using empowered spells on evoker.

A+ from me on this expansion.

It was fine in BFA and later in shadowlands. The beginning of shadowlands was kind of garbage because tanks refused to kite anything and just wanted to face tank everything regardless of dots or mechanics.

Also, most good tanks you never have to heal which is nice.

The slow inevitable decline is real. My best guess, a prolonged lack of new players who actually stick around and an old guard playerbase who has left for a myriad of reasons including simple burn out. There will absolutely come a point that the company cannot justify the cost of development for the size expansions we have come to expect, given a certain top line number.

I’ve said this in a previous thread but I believe it’s because gearing up through pretty much any form of pve content is possible and easy now. (Which I’m not against)

People who only play 1 character will gear themselves up in 2-3 weeks with ease, and then quit until next patch.

I would absolutely gear multiple toons. On my main I ran non stop for the first few weeks. Hundreds of dungeons, raids got my gear and then started an alt. On my hunter I have run probably 20 dungeons and got one piece of loot. I just cant bring myself to grind on an alt like I did on my main. Especially with the healing changes making every pug take at least 30 minutes and feel like a slog.

IMO they should increase dungeon drop rates and slow the upgrade system a little bit. Maybe share currency across characters.

I liked DF a lot in season 1. Season 2 has been a dud for me. I think M+ is boring without a seasonal. I’m not into the Dragons with daddy issues story at all. The raid is average. No point in playing until the new mega dungeon comes out.

Unless you play professions, then it is worse than ever. 7 months in and still not done - despite being pretty diligent week on week.

Eh. It is alright. Traversing the map is fun. Trying to get/land in a specific location is just annoying. Frankly, if it disappeared tomorrow, I wouldn’t care. WoW has always been about what you do at A and B, not how you get from A to B.

Too many people left between BFA and SL. We have been asking for “no more chores” for how long now? 10 years? Since at least Legion.

People seem to be under the impression that MMOs die slowly, while that is partially true, you will also see big dips in the graph. The first M in mmo is important. At some point servers hit a critical mass (or lack thereof) in terms of population. So folks dip.

Summer is usually a big lull, the real question is will 10.1.5 draw them back and entice them to come see 10.2, that is an important patch in the cycle blizz needs to nail, because r now everyone is out partying with their moms and sisters.

Blizz should have gotten ahead of this curve by making Zaralack rares normal silver plated rares without a lockout and nerfing OverWoRLd elites. so ppl lvling alts could just chill. And do some questies between pet battles!

hehehe don't read this its crazy talk

(Ion if ur reading, I want ur job, i’m a disabled trans veteran so it would look good for the company and get someone off a pension) <3

Yea I think the damage has been done to WoW between Legion/BfA/SL. Everybody pretty much universally hated the chores of artifact power, Azerite farming, and covenants. Now that they’ve finally listened it’s too late. Personally DF is shaping up to be my favorite expansion of all time behind only Vanilla WoW. It’s just so good. It’s so alt friendly. The raids are fun and engaging and not too hard for a boomer. M+ healing as a resto shaman has been an absolute blast. I pretty much love everything about DF outside of the story which is mildly mid, with a lack of new memorable characters(no Sire D level character to get you invested into)
I’ve even re fallen in love with arena PvP as an arms warrior. It genuinely feels good smashing a caster in caster meta.

I think we are in the twilight. If the next expac doesn’t hit hard af I’m not sure if we get 12.0

Per raider.io data DF season 1 had the highest number of keys run by a landslide, over 34 million keys ran.

DF season 2 is already 4th, and we are likely only halfway or less through it.

So…what?

One thing that killed it for me was the 123097547913 currencies they introduced (that of course go into your bag instead of their own screen) :man_facepalming:

the promo/intro cinematic for the expansion was also super lackluster compared to past expansions

I think they are setting the stage to go F2P. That’s what the trading post is for.

Personally, my guess is we see it go F2P at the end of DF or at some point in 11.0.

I agree, this seems to be their plan.

I’ve seen people talk about the new UI updates being a precursor for a future Xbox launch.

to be fair and since blizzard never shares the number of player anymore, this is due the pandemy just ending.

shadowlands didnt had the best numbers and it was in pandemy, so imagine if that never happened, shadowlands could had been que less played expansion.

I mean, this has mostly been the case since M+ came out. 30-minute content with no lockout that rewards raid quality gear? Yeah, gearing instantly switched from a 4 month grind via raiding to a 3 week spamfest.

I don’t feel like that’s gotten significantly more true in Dragonflight. Like, yes, more casual players have more options now, I guess? But M+ is still the biggest contributor for higher geared folks.
