It’s a safe assumption, given every single troll has had an Afro-Caribbean accent or just a straight Africa-by-way-of-Britain accent. And given we have met one (Dazar’alorr) and she does have the same generic Afro-Caribbean accent…
It’s really not an assumption, now is it?
There is a marked difference between a small hate group which is hardly a representative for an entire race or religion… And an entire race of people.
This isn’t a serious line of discussion, is it? Are you really trying to equate the Triple K with all of Africa? Like, if we can make fun of the Triple K, we should be okay with racism against Africans?
No. No, you’re not actually going there. I know you’re not seriously making this comparison, because I really donb’t think you even thought through what the comparison even is. I think you saw Zerde make the comparison against someone who won’t really push back against it and figured you’d try your luck here.
But screw it. I’ll give you what you want. It’s still the season of giving for me.
The Triple K people identify themselves as belonging to that group based on three shared things; their skin color (though they’ve actually gotten lax on this of late), their hatred for other races, and a very token lip service to fringe religious beliefs. Membership is purely opt-in. You are not born into the Triple K. You can choose to leave the Triple K. You have the option to not be racist. Their ideology is one they have chosen to follow. If you never make your ideological beliefs known, you’ll never suffer repercussions for having them.
Being black is not an ideology. You do not get to choose to be black. You didn’t wake up one day and decide to be born on the African continent to indigenous Africans, or the descendent of those born indigenous African. Outside of virtual spaces, you don’t get to choose for people to know your skin color. Furthermore, you didn’t choose to be born into the culture you were born into. These are all things outside of your control from the moment of your birth.
So no. There is no equating the two at all, and it’s a very bad look to imply there is.
Oddly, there seems to have been quite a lot more research done into Triple K practices and behaviors with the Scarlets than any African Diaspora cultures for trolls.
Y’know what strikes me as funny about that? It shows the devs have been willing to put in the research for quite a few cultures and organizations.
The best example, the one that highlights the raw dishonesty of saying expecting the devs to do the work is too high a standard?
Night elves.
Night elf culture is a blend of southeast Asian beliefs with some smattering of Celtic overtones, blended together in a way that doesn’t offend either group, and greatly enhanced by created fantasy -isms. The kaldorei show that the developers absolutely can weave together a racial narrative from IRL racial groups and create something new from them.
And this isn’t me finding things not there in the night elves. Metzen has mentioned it. The former art guy who loved pandas? He’s talked about it too. I believe others have also mentioned it.
A more recent example is the Kalu’ak. And the new centaurs, based on Mongolian cultures and aesthetics.
Blizzard can do it. Blizzard has done it. It’s made for better content overall when Blizzard does do it.
So why is it a bridge too far when we just want them to also do it for the race based on African and Afro-Caribbean cultures?
