Dragonflight alpha/beta thread

It was obviously old god related considering the whole tentacle/corruption/pustules on Galakrond.

2026? That seems really late for a Dragonflight book we will be near the end of the next expansion.

What the heck is going on with Blizzard publishing? There seems to be alot of delays/if not outright cancellations of books.

Geh at this point im not surprised by the current writing teams attempts to tear down the lore of warcraft to repaint it with their own rubbish. Warcraft is going to probably end up being and unrecognisable mess at the end of this expac more than it already is.

I gotta give props to the teams writing the side content though, they seemed to at least have a clue how to write interesting stories.

Makes me wonder if they have been told something. What if Microsoft plans to just soft reboot WoW once they own it? So they are cancelling books until then? I don’t know that’s a major tinfoil hat theory.

I have two theories regarding this book.

  • Theory 1: Blizzard did plan on having a prequel book but ended up discarding the idea for unknown reasons.
  • Theory 2: Someone at Amazon created the untitled book link in anticipation of the standard prequel novel only to then mess around with it after it became clear that their wasn’t going to be a prequel novel.

Speaking of things not appearing, sometime Lor’themar’s and Thalyssra’s marriage status was leaked Blizzard came out and said that the wedding was going to be a short story on the site.

Granted it could always come out between now and the release but you think it would have been out by now.

This isn’t the first time a novel has shown up on Amazon only to not actually come out. There was briefly a Troll Wars one on there too a year or two ago.

You’d think we’d be getting the standard pre-expansion slideshow animations too by now.

I think blizzard mentioned those are actually going to be in game and will be triggered after doing the respective quests for them

Also, is it just me or does anyone else find it funny that people complained about important stuff not being ingame, so blizz promised to start putting more stuff in game….and here we are complaining about not getting a novel that explains the plot of the game.

I dont see it as complaining, more just finding it odd. Ever since Wrath had the Rise of the Lich King novel, the expansions have had a prequel novel.

Plus not every novel had spoiled the plot. For example Shadows Rising, was a great read that advanced the story but didnt spoil a thing about Shadowlands. We knew about the Maw beforehand and the novel confirmed that Bwonsamdi was the best loa.

Though its possible DF simply doesn’t have a prequel novel because they couldn’t think of a plotline that wouldn’t spoil things.

Maybe complaining was a poor word choice. I mean, we’ll probably get a novel down the road eventually. Plus we have the Codex coming out next year, so we’ll have something to read eventually :dragon:

Microsoft’s general acquisitions strategy (as with EA and most other big acquirers!) is to mostly let them do what they want and set targets rather than edicts about the specific way to reach those targets. I imagine this was also true for Activision and Vivendi.

There is probably no universe in which ‘reboot WoW’ is the smart business move. Most of WoW’s money is earned through sheer momentum. They haven’t lost anywhere near enough potential revenue to risk that.

Even if there were, cancelling books doesn’t make much sense as the priority. That’s a potential tip-off of direction change, leadership likes to minimize those before they can make the public announcement. And were it a soft reboot, you could probably still recoup some money with minor changes.

Could speculate all day long on the specific causes, but suspect they have more to do with inflation affecting the margins on book sales or difficulties specific to an author etc etc etc than any big , 5 year+ long-direction adjustments.

It’s most likely they simply cancelled the book because it would have spoiled too much of the games story and people might not opt in to buying the expansion if a novel revealed too much of the games story

Mm. It wouldn’t be very rational – spoilers, last I heard (a few years ago) aren’t shown to significantly affect enjoyment on average because they actually heighten it modestly for a large population even if they reduce it severely for a minor population – but companies are not necessarily purely rational entities. I’m doubtful but it’s not farfetched, either.

The pessimist in me has a theory: They’re rushing the expansion, so of course they’re going to cut the novel.

So the prepatch is going to be broken up into phases.

Phase one is the UI, class, and talent changes, and opens all races to priest, mage, and rouge.
Phase two which starts on November 15 opens up the Dracthyr, the new Uldaman dungeon, and Primal Storms invasions.

Oh, that’s awesome. Gonna suck we’re loosing acess to most of our spells for a while though :dragon:

I don’t recall but I think that’s how the last few expansions have been too.

It does mean there’s still a whole month of nothing to do though.

Are they rushing it though? I mean they gave Shadowlands the WoD treatment and ended it early to move onto Dragonflight. So if anything I feel like Dragonflight will get a Legion treatment and not be rushed.
