Is there anything stopping non-blue flights from learning magic akin to how mortal mages need to go to an academy? I’ve never seen a green dragon use polymorph, but what’s stopping a green dragon from learning it?
I know non-blues aren’t charged with protecting magic or whatever, but does that mean they can’t learn a bunch of spells for fun? Would the blues step in and say “hey, you can’t do that, you’re not like us”?
I have a character idea is all, and I don’t know if it is feasible.
Retrying this! Think I misread.
There is a location in Dragonflight where dragons from multiple schools are learning magic. There’s red, green, bronze and, of course, blues. Black dragons, I can’t recall seeing.
Forget the name of it off the top of my head, but don’t think it’s outside the realm of possibility for a non-blue to learn some proper magic.

Honestly, I thought that school was just for dragonkin and not dragons themselves, and I’ve only ever seen dragons as the teachers and never the students. However, I’ve never seen anything saying dragons can’t apply for that school, either.
I can’t say I know the hard rules of dragons, but I figured if proper dragons are teaching dragonkin, and by association dracthyr, how to do magic stuff then everything is fair game.
That’s not to say they will be proficient outside of their established schools. Probably really bad, depending, but I don’t see why it can’t be done. Maybe there’s a dragon expert out there who can clarify but the way I see it? Perfectly feasible.

There’s nothing really stopping them from doing something like this in a raw physical sense. I think it’s just more how their society is set up - a green dragon is born and trained in Green Dragon Things™ and their entire job in life revolves around green stuff. Polymorph isn’t really a needed spell when taking care of the environment and the emerald dream. Even if they do need a polymorph spell, there’s an entire other flight dedicated to taking care of all that stuff, so they’re far more likely to just ask a blue friend instead of going out of their way to learn it themselves. So why bother when there’s conveniently available mages who already have decades, centuries, and millennia of experience if a green dragon happens to need a polymorph spell for whatever reason. From a social standpoint, too, a green dragon wanting to learn the arcane would be spending the next heck knows how many decades around blue dragons, likely leaving all their green friends behind, which is just plain 'ol difficult.
That said, I’d certainly expect these norms to shift to varying degrees considering recent events. Especially with how many losses the blue flight experienced in recent memory, I’m sure there’s opportunities for cross training if someone really wanted to. Additionally, there was a certain geographic element when the flights were involved in Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor issues. Things were fairly spread out, but that’s less of a thing now too since the flights have a dedicated gathering spot on the Dragon Isles.
Also worth noting that there are non-flight-ish dragons available, such as the Netherdrakes, who technically are black dragons but are basically forced to be involved in magic-y nonsense to some degree for lifespan reasons. I also think it’d be perfectly fine to do just in general as long as the reasoning made sense - maybe a green dragon (since I’ve been talking about the greens anyway) had a particular project that involved…I dunno, the study of the arcane on a local environment and how that change (potentially) impacted the Emerald Dream. In that case, they’d likely learn quite a bit about magic and have a perfectly valid reason for being around the arcane for quite a while.
In short: Perfectly feasible, but like any other character building decision you’d want to consider the broader impact and underlying reasons so that the character ‘works’ properly. I don’t know of anything off the top of my head that says a green dragon would detonate for some reason if they tried to learn and cast a polymorph spell.

There is nothing stopping other flights from learning magic! Korialstrasz/Krasus ( a red dragon and one of Alexstraza’s consorts) was a mage and even a senior member of the Kirin Tor’s ruling council

Thanks, everyone! I think I will proceed with my idea now.
Nothing stopped a Red Dragon from becoming a mage of the Kirin Tor.
Most non-blues simply don’t have the aptittude or the interest.
In fact, most dragons are not humble enough to apprentice themselves to a mortal.

Nope. Case and point, Krasus aka Korialstrasz was a red dragon and very powerful mage.
He could use all kinds of arcane magic, while having greater proficiency with fire, and could use “life” spells because of the innate power of the red flight.
So long as they can harness mana, they can learn magic, even if it’s not the kind they were born to.

Most simply aren’t willing to apprentice under a mortal.
IIRC in the Green Dragonflight place in the Dragon Isles, there’s a NPC that is an arcane magic researcher or something. Gotta double check that to see if I’m remembering right.
