Dragon age veilguard

Is much better than the reviews are letting on. The graphics are amazing and the combat is fun.

My only complaints are the story, not what it is exactly but how it’s being presented. It’s a pretty big deal and there’s a lot at stake but it just moves by so fast and nothing seems to be taken seriously. It’s different from previous dragon age games but they’ve all be so different from the last it’s not fair to compare them. It’s also a lot less open world and more of an on rails action rpg, think Batmans combat mixed with mass effect.

I get the feeling that most of the negative reception is just people whining about the same old arguments that stem from very closed minds.

Seems most of the reasonable criticism is that the game plays it safe and doesn’t really play like older DA games, instead leaning more towards Assassin’s Creed combat.

Another thing that seems reasonable is illusion of choice in dialogue. Fair point, but I think we’re just all super spoiled by Baldur’s Gate 3.

It’s the same old complaints, it’s not DA:O

well two things

  1. the people who made DA:O left Bioware a long time ago
  2. no way in hell is EA launching a cRPG, they want console sales first and foremost which means action game with light & basic RPG elements.

BG3 are titanic boots to fill

cRPG standard is now so high that anything that comes out is going to be automatically compared to BG3 and found lacking

BG3 had five things going for it

1- well known IP
2- huge budget
3 - developer dedicated to the cRPG format
4 - publisher is the developer so little outside pressure
5 - capable developer

DA has
1- well known IP
2- huge budget
3 - developer avoiding the cRPG format and going more Mass Effect combat
4 - publisher is notorious for getting heavily involved in development and focused on maximizing revenue streams
5 - developer is a mixed bag of capabilities

This is the only thing that matters in a Dragon Age game which is why it’s not getting great reviews.

Sometimes I wish games would take bigger chances.

The combat is pretty generic. I am not excited by it. Just watching gameplay it seems like I’ve seen this exact thing a hundred times before.

Again, nobody plays the Dragon Age games for their combat or gameplay. They play it solely for the story.

Beating the original game on nightmare was a joke but again, nobody cares because the story was so good. It was like playing a book.

I feel like my complaint about this game (from what I’ve seen about it) is the same reason I liked Prometheus more than Romulus lol

latter took no chances, and seemingly neither does Veilguard.

But you are very correct, a captivating story will win over a lot of players. It’s what works for FF14, and it’s combat is pretty lame.

WoW is the opposite of these games, excellent gameplay and uh…well the story exists.

the WoW story is just so bad at times, also the DA:O plot was a complete rip off from return of the king. When most people speak fondly of the game, its for the combat.

honestly I don’t even think I finished any of the DA games, I was always more of a NWN player.

or point and click adventure games on PC, which are more visual novels anwyay

The writing is really bad. I don’t have the patience to sit through the numerous dialogue where they repeat the most obvious observations.

“the docks are empty, they shouldn’t be empty”
" something is wrong"
“the marketplace is empty, it shouldn’t be empty”
" this isn’t right"
Really doesn’t feel like a dragon age game, but more like someones fan fiction.

I sometimes wonder if it ends up being a corporate thing.

Often, in business writing, we lean towards lower grade writing level for ease of communication. like, below 8th grade level for maximum exposure.

Perhaps they are given directive for very simplistic writing so that more people can “enjoy” the content.

The story doesn’t feel any faster than inquisition. I am of course doing every single side quest too. Over all I really like it, and I’m enjoying it more than Inquisition. This has more of a DA2 feel with how tight knit the party feels.

I love all the characters I have acquired so far and my pansexual head usually leans more for the female companions in these games but OMG Lucanis OMG he makes me swoon (as much as VG chara can lol)

But over all I’m very happy with it given none of the Original devs are involved.

I’ll probably give it a shot once it goes on sale.

It’s a 6/10 game.
Choices don’t matter.
Graphics pretty. Character models eh.
Combat starts bad, gets great when you have 3 skills/build fleshes out, gets meh lvl 26+ because everything just evaporates if it looks at you by this point.
Story is standard Bioware structure but the story itself isn’t very good.
Characters are more hits than misses but the dialogue is egregiously bad in spots.

Average at best

I’m diggin’ it so far. Been doing every side quest and puzzle as I come across them. The graphics are nice. Combat is fairly simple. The story is engaging enough with plenty of codex to read.
Biggest thing for me, however, is I see replay potential in it with lots of choices in playstyle and group combinations, relationships, etc.

Same! I think my favorite part so far was when that one lady misgendered Taash and then self-flagellated by doing pushups! Haha that was epic!

If you respect your audience and deliver high quality rpg gameplay that respects their intelligence it pays off. If you treat them like they’re stupid and cater to the philosophy they need to be handheld you get what you get.

I believe this is why Baldur’s Gate 3 did so well. I say this because what I’m hearing and seeing in reviews says this is very much handhold’ish and the loot also is bad or kind of pointless.

I’m sure it’s an okay game though and people will still like it for what it is, but the issue is I think most people expect a lot from Bioware. Sadly I think all that Bioware was left years ago and is mostly used in name only to stoke sales.

Needless to say Mass Effect better be built a LOT better.
