Just started back playing and recently ran sims for top gear etc. How close to the DPS the sim says you're doing should a good, not great, player hope to achieve. I'm currently doing around 3k less than the sim says I should be at but hope to improve that once I get more familiar with the game again.
Thanks in advance.

3k under the sim is fine. Never go for what the sim says. The sim is your best possible dps. It’s assuming you’re just standing there ignoring everything and doing your rotation perfectly for 5 minutes with all the raid buffs consumes etc. Realistically if the sim says you’re supposed to be doing 12k and you’re doing just under 10k that’s just fine. Take it with a grain of salt always.

I’m assuming this is a Patchwerk sim? Remember, true Patchwerk-esque fights are rare. The closest we have in SotF is Skrolex. And even that requires a moderate, though easily planned for, amount of movement. If your raid team is good enough then Dausegne is Patchwerk-like, as on heroic or below you’ll essentially tunnel the boss and only cleave down the add.
That said, you’re simming somewhere around 10,000 iterations. So the result is going to be relatively realistic and achievable, given apples to apples environments (the real issue). Being within a couple thousand DPS of your sim in most scenarios is going to be solid. On more Patchwerk-like fights, that gap could (and should?) be less.
What I’d recommend you do to really test if you’re actually performing your rotation well, is do a target dummy sim on RaidBots. Then run your own in-game comparison, going for the same amount of time. As its states on RaidBots, target dummy sims assume the target is at 100% at all times (so execution abilities aren’t factored in), with no raid buffs, nor any consumables.
That’s a far more realistic way to compare yourself to your sims.

when i used to sim i wouldn’t care about getting super close to what the sims say. Why? because when i sim i didn’t sim for movement fights or length of the fights. ontop of that they don’t sim for failure either nobody is perfect people make mistakes in terms of rotations/movement/etc… sometimes i would have to sacrifice my own DPS just to soak stuff people are not so we don’t wipe.
3k less isn’t bad
