DPS: What was the funnest spec to play at any point in WoW's history, and why?

For me, Survival Hunter (melee) ranks pretty highly (even prior to Dragonflight) due to the following:

  • Wildfire Infusion - Talent
    • Variety of meaningful effects that synergize with other talent choices.
    • Predictable effects with fairly controllable timing (not RNG-based)
    • Works with existing abilities (does not add to button bloat)
  • Bloodseeker - Talent
    • Synergizes with any bleed effects, even those provided by other players. So few abilities synergize outside of the class like this.
    • Works off an existing ability that is regularly used (Kill Command).
    • Synergizes with 2 of the 3 wildfire infusions (Kill Command Resets or Bleed)
  • Mongoose Strike - Talent
    • Very straightforward ability.
    • High skill cap due to a finite window and the nature of Focus management (and all of the other abilities than can help with this).
    • Not super punishing if you can’t execute your Mongoose windows perfectly, but super rewarding if you can.
  • Harpoon + Terms of Engagement - Talents
    • Like Warrior Charge, but better. Damage, resource regen, etc.
    • Reset on kill makes outdoor world gameplay (of killing one mob or one group of mobs at a time) feel so much more engaging. Warrior charge seriously needs an option for this sort of mechanic.
    • You don’t even have to get the killing blow for Terms of Engagement to trigger, you just need to damage it once.
    • No limit on how often resets can occur.
  • No casted abilities (aside from revive pet).

Survival Hunter’s talent tree is a bit of a hot mess, but the core ideas into many of their abilities are just amazing.

for me its always been rogues and pvp. Being able to sap, blind, cheap shot, gouge, kidney shot an advancing horde at mid before they advance too far is always fun. Love breaking up the calvary charge.

Balance Druid is by far my favorite spec in the game, and it has been for most of the game’s existence.

Affliction Warlocks was a favorite of mine, but I’ve been pretty unhappy with it for a while (I haven’t tried it in Dragonflight yet).

I would have to say all 3 warlock specs.
But in order of demo, affliction, and then destro.

Its just fun running around with your demon buddy, you have a fun and satisfying rotation. Youre not juggling a thousand different long cooldowns.
Its not a spec thing but a class thing, but having all 3 specs means that you have the tools for any and every job. Plus they all use the same gear and stat priority, so you dont have to worry about if its any good for your other specs.

When warlocks had Dark Apotheosis in mists and could literally tank

Also:
when demo locks had the glyph that let them fall from the sky as a meteor instead of taking fall damage

and when rogues had burst of speed and didnt need mounts

Just demo with meta was good fun. The fact that your rotation effectively involved you jumping in and out of melee was interesting

Despite all the memes, DH has been and continues to be the most transformative spec blizzard has ever created. The extreme mobility, the fun and flashy animations, and the powerful CDs w/ the leech make me feel like I’m playing a different game. I can never make an alt because DH is too fun lol

Warlock, when I could cast fear on multiple/all targets.

soul link/siphon life spec in pvp in tbc.

my favorite was hemo rogue that specialized in deleting targets with high armor.

i cant remember when that was exactly.

Stormstrike is the dopamine button.

Hands down any DPS during the corruption phase of BFA…

On this BM hunter, I could roll an entire M+ dungeon with 100% crit… crazy times…

On my PROT warrior, with 6x twilight devastation I could wipe out packs… fun times.

Many people complained about obtaining corrupted pieces, but once you had them, it was a BLAST!!!

oh yeah that was nice but it came with a downside…

i cannot fathom playing arms anymore after tasting it with full haste corruptions. feels boring as hell now.

That’s how I feel about BM now :frowning:

The BFA azerite traits and corruption play style were so fun… Just feels so blah now…

sub rogues back when shadowstep first came out in BC. having prep, sometimes going imp sprint for the slow breaking ability, instead of sub/assn for bigger damage. Super elusive, lots of crowd control, and as NE you could work shadowmeld into the rotation as a psuedo 3rd vanish if you could manage to get distance on an opponent and get out of combat.

going 1v2 in westfall and harassing grom’gol were some of my best memories on WoW. the cat and mouse game at grom’gol was so much fun. sometimes up to 5-10 70s would show up and all i’d ever use on them is CCs while breaking stealth for half a second to keep popping the lowbies.

Gladiator stance prot warrior in Warlords, I had the most fun ever playing that spec. Mop-wod DK was also pretty fun, current day DK is bleh

Smol edit:
Mop Demo
Mop 2h Enhance
Mop classes in general
Warlords monk
Shadow with orbs
Mop Woyer

I remember kiting the entirety of the Everbloom dungeon a time or two on my DK tank… mostly due to the DoT also having a slow mechanism and most mobs being melee.
