DPS Warriors Lost Their Fantasy

This is in no way a cry for buffs or an attempt to be top DPS again. This is just my feelings on how warriors have lost what made them feel good in the first place.

Arms has been known as a dangerous spec to be on the opposite end of in PvP since the beginning and has had that feeling of strength for a long time. To me strength in WoW as a warrior is hitting very hard and attacking very slow. Some people might say that’s what warriors are doing right now and they are… but… they’re also not. This current expansion if you raid with an arms warrior or have one yourself, you kill a boss or PvP and you look to see what your damage looks like and there it is! Staring right back at you… Over 60% of the damage you dealt is passive bleed you apply while attacking. Now normally I wouldn’t mind this and in fact didn’t for the longest time until I played around on a Ret Paladin alt for a little bit and there it was! Templars Verdict was doing what Mortal Strike should be doing! Massive hits but not able to be spammed and then it got me thinking about Warriors on how it was easier for blizzard to just change their mechanics to deal with balancing rather than deal with the raw damage that they used to do.

Fury has felt the same wrath of blizzard that Arms did. Titans grip was added in Wrath of the Lich King and was a symbol of strength and brutality! No other class could be as strong as the warrior being able to wield two 2handed swords! Still fury was slow and heavy but had the feeling of strength! Fury warriors today feel like they are just a soft fast damage class. Having two 2handers is meaningless to fury warriors and they hit so soft. That right there screams the fantasy is gone

Warriors should be the strongest melee in the game! Now that doesnt mean highest dps… It means the heaviest hitter. The whole point of the warrior is that they’re so physically strong that they don’t need to borrow power from the light like paladins or borrow their strength from undeath like DKs. They are their own source of power and carved their way into the ranks on brute strength alone.

This is just how I feel about warriors in the current expansion and in Shadowlands too. I played the Class since 2004 and no longer enjoy it for these reasons.

Do any other old warriors feel the same as I do?

Oh my God, they literally changed the Deep Wounds mastery and it’s coming live actually today. What is the point of this wall of text.

There is much more to it than the mastery of arms. This change may not even fix what I see is a problem but OH MY GOD so much reading you clearly didn’t do is also about fury and the feel of the class in general. Was this too many words for you again?

I don’t have an issue with the class fantasy of a fast fury warrior. I love the way fury feels currently. The upbeat pace makes me feel like a raging berserker, no care about the finesse of combat, just SMASH RAWR. The numbers are not something I focus on as part of a class fantasy.

I get you want to see the big numbers, but the big crits and then empty space of a Ret Pally is one of the reasons they aren’t as popular, because in short bursts they’re incredible, but over a long sustained fight they’re very CD dependent. (I admit fully I have only a cursory understanding of Ret gameplay and am basing this opinion off all the complaints of my guilds paladins)

As for the Arms mastery (I know they’re changing it), what feels more like a refined warrior than placing your strikes to slowly bleed your opponent to death while outplaying them with your weapon of choice.

These of course are only my opinions though, but I enjoyed my Fury warrior in BFA and miss that speed and pace currently. Looking forward to 9.2 when my haste gets me there again.

A lot of classes don’t feel like they should anymore. I think when they went to Artifact weapons it was a point where they had to change so much, and now they have no idea how to fix it.

You spent a lot of words to say that you forgot to turn off floating combat text.

I get what your saying. I enjoyed warrior (arms) in legion cause of the big mortal strikes. I enjoyed warrior before that for the same reason. I didn’t like gladiator stance cause it seems like a coward way to fight I didn’t pick warrior to hide behind a shield I picked it to be a beast and hulk smash everyone and steal kills with huge executes.

To the people posting before me. How I translate it is you don’t care how you deal damage as long as you do damage. So the class you play could be a stick man and you’d be happy as long as you can see your name on the dps meter.

I like to top the charts I also like to visualize that when I charge hamstring mortal strike someone I’d like to see their hp drop by like 20>-50% otherwise what’s the point of being a badass who charges in with his face. Might as well be a rogue who lines up damage for his peers.

No, it’s not.

Fury was always about faster hits. It’s just evolved as the game has.

That’s not a bad thing.

Literally no one has said that. Quit inventing straw men to argue against. You sound ridiculous. We have different opinions about what is relevant to fulfilling the class’s fantasy.

Yeah and its crap. You will see once server is up. Instead of mastery directly increasing your damage they stupidly made it so the bleed application has to be there first for the damage increase to take place. So a lot of your heaviest hitting ability will not get the benefit of the first deep wound tick thereby missing out on the increased damage from mastery.

Its fine for PVP but feels so terrible for pulls in M plus.

I’ve already posted about this in another thread. I know.

Ironically, this is what people like OP wanted and it’s why we’re stuck with this garbage mastery because of muh big crits gameplay and wheres muh warrior fantasy.

I actually don’t agree - on Arms. The Fury comments I think I agree with though. I think Arms from a fantasy point of is not about hitting things slow and hard, but rather being a “master at arms”. A weapons master and tactician.

Ever since Vanilla the Arms flavour has been about superior resource management, and debuffing the enemy with rends, hamstrings, and mortal strikes.

Yes we have always used big slow weapons but we’ve done it as a tactician, and debuffer - more a weapon master than a club wielding oaf.

Just going to point out something responding to Arms:

Arms has many, MANY possible interpretations both in actual WoW lore and in fantasy in general, from the slow heavy hitter to the skilled technician or the fast and lethal striker, or even the self-taught brawler who’s not exactly careful but not wild. Or the one who can be both a skilled technician AND a fast and lethal striker. And that’s only scratching the surface. If you’ve ever played the game For Honor, many of the fighters there are fantastic examples of Arms warriors, particularly the Warden, the Raider and the Kensei. In fact, I’d say more then half of the fighters are Arms warriors. I started listing them off and found that in one example, I’d named off most of the faction’s fighters.

A great example of a fast and lethal striker in WoW? Blademasters. Skilled technician? Saurfang. Deadly brawler? Varian Wrynn.

The fantasy of warriors is very varied. Fury warriors also. There’s the Conan-eque barbarians, there’s the frenzied berserkers, and there’s another self-taught fighter who strikes wildly. WoW has an interesting take in their lore, however, as the dwarven Mountain King/Thane. These are VERY MUCH fury warriors, but heavily armored and their skin becomes like stone (and wreathed in lava, if it’s a Dark Iron). The sheer volume of axe swings and hammer blows when they get going puts the enemy on the back foot. Are these blows as heavy as a massive overhead chop from a strong orc? No. But they shatter bone all the same.

Point is, the fantasy of the warrior is not all about hitting the hardest. Paladins, Death Knights? They have very specific fantasies. Warriors have many.
