DPS threat

Are you using earth shock? If so, don’t–that generates a bunch of threat.

Honestly, you just need to wait for the shaman kit to open up…my buddy was feeling the same way about his shammy, then he got WF totem and now he is always ecstatic about his WF crits. Give it time my dude.

If that is true then the tank was doing absolutely nothing to generate threat. The problem wasn’t you.

Group based play? Interdependent classes? Design other than max dps at all times?

I.e., all the aspects of classic we wanted so badly?

I don’t think it helped that he was like 6 or 7 levels below me. WC seems to be popular around level 17, 18 and I waited too long to do it.

This is what’s doing it.

Rockbiter adds a significant amount of threat to your melee hits.

Every crit is effectively a taunt on the mob with each auto just adding to that.

Granted, with a good weapon, Windfury will also occasionally rip threat off the tank but with Rockbiter it’s you and the tank fighting against each other.

I primarily wanted the talent trees.

Rockbiter is basically taunting the enemey with every hit, its there if you need to be an off tank only use it when solo questing. Earth shock also has a threat mechanic, use fireshock or frostshock once you get it, with Flametongue weapon and then switch to windfury once you have it.

Dont waste time woth a 2h before windfury, just use a 1h and shield with flametongue weapon. Dont use earth shock unless you need and interup, and only use rank 1 in thay case. Definately dont be using rockbiter

I’ll have to use the flame enhancement next time. I didn’t know rockbiter added extra threat.

Thanks for the help.

Shouldn’t matter, if you pull from auto attacks the tank isn’t doing his job. Also you could probably tank a mob long enough to kill it. When I tank or heal and I see a DPS pull a mob away from the tank If it’s the one everyone has been targeting and health is down on it I’ll let the DPS finish it off. It’s not a real worry until higher levels anyway. Also throw a heal on yourself if needed when that happens.

You can still enhance your weapons…just avoid the one that causes additional threat.

Flametongue may be a better choice?

That’s just not true when you’re using rock biter… in that case, it’s not just the auto attack itself. It’s like a Ret Paladin putting on righteous fury and wondering why he’s pulling aggro.

If you’re consistently pulling off tank at that level there’s two big reasons:

  1. You’re using Rockbiter. Stop it.
  2. You’re using Earth Shock. Stop it. Downscale to Rank 1 for interrupts only.

Both of those abilities generate massive additional threat beyond just the damage it deals. This is mostly Blizz’s fault because when they first conceptualized Shamans they started designing them originally to be another Horde tank in order to mirror Alliance paladins, but abandoned that direction towards end game entirely.

(If you want to get an idea of what a mess Enhancement shamans were in Vanilla, just take a look at your 21 point talents. You have to specialize to even Parry—and this was AFTER the talent tree overhauls and optimizations.

It gets better once you get more tools, like Flame Shock and Windfury to replace Rockbiter/ES, though, so hang in there.

Bad news, you might pull aggro even with a 1h and shield. I use that and occasionally dps and I can still rip aggro. If windfury procs off a stormstrike and something crits, which it will because I’m stacking agi, I’ll pull threat.

There’s a chain reaction when you pull threat with a SS, ES combo: attack, extra attack, debuff, interrupt and then when the mob hits you it gets struck by a lightning shield charge. That’s a huge threat spike, not counting any fire totems that were active.

You are a hybrid class. This means that in dungeons you will be forced to do subpar damage because you don’t have a threat dump, and in raids you will do subpar damage because you will oom. If you wanted to DPS you should have picked a DPS class. IE Mage/Lock/Hunter/Rogue. Healing capable classes have damage gimped for balance reasons.

Shaman DPS is absolutely bonkers, but it is unreliable and RNG based if it comes from Enhancement due to the randomness of Windfury, and burns on a short fuse with Elemental (due to going OOM so fast). Frankly, if you want to consistently deal very high damage, in melee, with a big weapon, warrior is the class for you. If you want a hybrid playstyle that fight very competently in melee, heal at a high level, tank in emergencies, and blasts people into the next dimension in PvP, shaman is the class for you, but you are gonna need to master your mana management first. If you want to avoid pulling too much aggro, you’ll need to forgo earthbiter and find a good tank capable of generating enough threat to counteract your crazy Windfury crits/chain lightning blasts.

Not if he finds the right guild, he won’t be. I’d like to think that we aren’t all so obsessed with top-of-the-line meta builds as to prevent people from playing the specializations that they find the most fun. Using your logic, Druids don’t even have a place in the raiding scene due to the hybrid tax, but we know that that isn’t true.
