How are they for DPS? I want to play one are they easy, pull good numbers? I don’t have any interest to be a healer or tank.
are they easy
Incredibly. If you can count from 1 to 5, you can play Ret.
pull good numbers
It’s… alright. On the lower side of middle of the pack in EP, and it’s got decent representation in M+.
for raids they are a solid middle of the pack on all logs but I still manage to pull top DPS in my guild on fights like commander and sometimes ashvane on mythic if I play aggressively.
For mythic plus if you have a cautious tank I pull numbers like 35k overall damage for the dungeon. If they pull fast and aggressively and we don’t wipe i can pull 45-50k overall on a dungeon. (I spec differently for dungeons and raids)
in raids you are pretty much just expected to do damage unless you are cheezing stuff with bubble or bop. if you want to take m+ somewhat seriously you are expected to play hybrid at times like throw out group heals, cleanse poisons, freedom, bop, loh, etc.
i personally have a lot of fun as ret, i’ve got all classes to max except DK and haven’t really found one I like more. Balance druid comes close
edit
for easy play I would recommend just spec into the free procs spec for raiding. just press your buttons when they come up use judgement on cooldown. don’t waste holy power.
if you want to play the top build for raiding which is more ‘complicated’ hekili is a nice rotation addon that is well supported for ret that can help get you used to the flow of the rotation better. this would be using inquisition HoW and execution sentence with condenced life force and razor coral trinket.
Here’s what you really need to ask yourself…Do you want to shoulder bash a caster to make them forget how to cast (warrior) OR do you want to back hand them so hard that they forget how to cast (paladin)?
Ret is more than fine this tier. We have our moments where we stand out in the raid, viable in M+(Though any melee besides a rogue is going to be a burden until next patch), and we have a couple of different viable ways to build.
Rotation is simple enough. No more complicated than any other DPS.
Ret Pallas like others have said are a middle of the pack Dps spec. Probably because if you look at the class they are multi role class being top healers, not bad tanks, and not bad dps (so the hybrid tax, everything is viable even at the high end but nothing crazy)
For Ret you are brought into raid for the utility. Bubble, Bop, freedom, LoH, HoJ even WoG. Making some mouse over macros and using these effectively is the reason your there. (Pumping Dps is obviously a given)
For mythic+ in a group where you plan your route and build your talents accordingly can yield massive DPS numbers. In most pugs you can pull adequate dps, but as most of the time pugs run default routes you won’t be having the most effective wing timings with also having baby pulls. But again most of the time you are there for the utility and massive off healing with WoG.
Now for ease of play, yes they are not a hard class but non of the classes are ”hard”.But what makes a good Ret paladin is good dps and effective usage of utility. As you can single handedly be the difference between a boss kill, finishing the M+ on time, to single handedly being a nightmare in PvP!
(Based of personal thoughts/ play experience)
They are easiest class to play right after DH ( It’s too easy). Always in middle of the pack in DPS Class. Initially you won’t enjoy it much until you got some haste. To avoid it play , as other said play proc based talents. Once you got 18+ haste you will start enjoying it. A paladin always shine when he know his toolkit and how to use them. It’s always good having a experienced ret in group specially in Brusting/Grievious Week. I always try to get a ret in Tyrannical keys due to their insane damage during wings period.
I just started a ret spec after doing nothing but prof for BFA. I was lucky enough to loot and save DPS gear to the point that I have a usable dps set. At 435 with only 16 haste I was hitting peak using all of my CDs 45k and once I leveled out it was 30+ On Heroic Zaqul. I’m still learning, but realize at lower haste my talent and Azerite choices are very important for procs and such in order to maintain steady dps. I’m also running a single target spec.
One thing I’ve learned is that if I don’t use the proper rotation my dps suffers a lot.
Once you get your gear on a good level and learn rotations you blow out everyone unless its a fully geared demon hunter. You will never blow out a demon hunter in dps if they are on the same level as you, its just not possible. Other than those guys, everyone moves out your way as they know what your about to pull down and how bad your going to blow the meter to pieces.
