DPS main question

I normally pick a healer to main but I’m thinking of picking a DPS for midnight to change it up. I generally play M+. Was thinking I’d pick rogue but concerned it’ll be difficult to find groups. Is there a “safe” DPS class that is generally wanted so I don’t constantly get rejected from keys? I’d prefer my limited play time isn’t purely spent getting rejected.

I don’t PvE but from what i’ve heard Hunter is always good. Ranged DPS with high Physical Damage.

Marksmen Hunters specifically apparently plays like Chris Kyle

Nice. Give me the opportunity to live out my alternate life.

When I lighty (emphasis on lightly) dipped my toes into Mythic+ during Shadowlands when my friends pressured me Rogue was desired for that spell we have that lets us stealth the entire group.

Apparently it was good for skipping mobs so you can make the Mythic+ timer.

That was two expansions ago though so I don’t know if that is still the case. I personally love my Outlaw Rogue, I cleave mobs in the open worlds/delves like nothing.

But yeah take my info with a grain of salt, hopefully a PvEhead comments soon lol

rogue doesn’t bring a lot that is unique, unfortunately. however, many rogues I have seen tend to be good players. you do have a damage reduction poison and the group cloak if there are clever skips. tricks is good, but tank threat is not a real thing. mob control can be really good, tossing out a blind on that annoying hunter mob… if you play rogue, plan on being the interrupt king and everyone will love you.

for M+ dps, think about not only damage output but also utility. and also about the other specs that are likely to be prevalent in the tank and healer roles.

from what I’ve seen resto druid will likely be frequent healer, so balance/feral druid will likley not be a great pick.

tanks picks look like prot pally and VDH, so havoc/devourer might be iffy.

but what do people look for in m+ utility?

-lust: ele/enh shaman, hunters, mages, evokers

-brez: ret pally, DK, druid, warlock

-buffs: mages, shadow priests, shaman, druids

so in my opinion, almost any ranged would be good.

“safest” is probably mage. lots of utility and one of the specs should be good and/or enjoyable.

warlock has lots of utility and 3 different specs. again, one should be decent.

you might just swap to elemental on that toon.

or if you wanted to try something different, augmentation evoker might be making a bit of a comeback.

Shaman DPS was pretty easy to get into groups all of TWW. They were meta of s1 and top 5 DPS in s3, but you bring lust and a raid buff that everyone wants.

No.

Your chances are improved with utility (bres, lust) or if you’re playing a fotm spec.

Classes with multiple dps specs are more likely to have one that is fotm (e.g. lock, mage, hunter).

So you could go with a class that has multiple dps specs AND utility to hedge yourself. I’d recommend playing what you find fun, though.

What Vox says here is accurate. Also helps if you get buddy buddy with a healer/tank, ask them to run with you.

Best of luck, I’m not built for DPS pugging AKA rejection and waiting, so I tank or heal.

Hard to get into groups as a rogue, but you can make your own like me lol

Typically, a class with bloodlust or battlereZ have easier times getting invites

I was thinking I may have to do that. I guess I’m spoiled with healer invites!

as a former outlaw main i agree with your concern. mage always has at least one solid spec for m+. lock doesn’t bring much other than damage, but they’ve usually got one strong spec as well.

yeah, not a thing anymore :frowning: it was so useful in so many places that they changed dungeon design to remove any reason/place to make use of it. which is probably healthy for the game, but feels bad to get rid of one of the few reasons to bring a rogue to keys.

Safest bet is usually Mage or Warlock.

Nobody is really safe from poor tuning that could happen with any patch, but as others have said mage is a good bet.

If you wanted to do Melee (since your first choice is rogue), enhance shaman brings lust and a good group buff as well, along with decent utility.

Depending on the key levels you aim for though, it may not matter. In S2 I was able to pug up to KSL level as Outlaw no problem. As a dps you just need to work your score up and not try to skip ahead.

Mage will always have at least 1 meta spec.

Anything with good utility like a strong buff, lust or brez. So yeah, not rogue, they used to be useful when Blizzard allowed skips, but they removed that from the game by making virtually everything see stealth.

Poor warlocks, nobody ever remembers the brez.

If you want to play rogue just play it. If you focus on one character you’re going to be fine. If you have trouble getting groups than you just have to make your own groups.

One thing I used this prepatch for, was to figure out what I wanted to main. I took every character that was a main contender and ran them through the prepatch event to see how I actually enjoyed them or not.

Before doing this, I was set on paladin or shaman. After doing this I dropped them and decided I preferred mage and/or dk. Which I will be doing new testing to confirm this decision after the class changes today, but it’s amazing what a little testing can change.

eh, that’s not super valuable now that everyone can get jumper cables. personally i love healthstones and soulstone and locks are cool – i was going to main demo for TWW and might give it another shot for midnight – but i don’t think they’re usually considered a big utility class. i could be wrong!
