DPS Mage is Dead

I would like to say, you devs have done a great job developing sod for the most part, but this next phase has me extremely worried. DPS mage set bonuses on the new tier are simply underpowered in comparison to the other caster counterparts. Set bonuses should feel powerful and fun to chase, but these bonuses just aren’t. The 2P, while nice is a quality-of-life bonus and should NOT be a set bonus. The 4p is cool in theory, letting us press Balefire Bolt more often, but once again feels like a quality-of-life improvement. The 6p which should be the one you want to go after is so underwhelming, that if you look at Shadow Priest and Warlocks 2-4pc set bonuses you’d think they should be 6pc bonuses. Mages are extremely fun to play, but I’m really tempted to reroll if these changes go live. Spread the love.

They seem really strong. Feral got something similar in phase 7 for rake and it became most of their damage. Not saying its a 1:1 comparison here but it looks strong. Additionally you need to consider a set bonus relative to the classes overall strength.

Warrior has a lot of bad bonuses but a few really good ones. Outside of naxx sanctified you basically stack a 20% to all damage, 25% to your core abilities, and then 10%dmg+10% crit. That’s a massive amount of just flat damage boost. But youre still the worst DPS class even with all that, because youre starting from such a lower point.

If mage has a high baseline the set bonuses will have to not be as strong to compensate.

The smoke alarms exist so you can react before the fire burns your house down. Saying you should wait until the foundations are ash before you react to the flames is simply not intelligent.

reacting and overreacting is two different things. “DPS Mage is Dead” is an overreaction. And, this is not smoke. It’s SoD

Problem is they don’t. ZG set gives us 65% more damage, and frost is still worse than fire. Naxx set gives 40% more damage, and mages are competing. But they’re taking that away, and not really putting anything in its place.

The dps set bonuses actually look fun. But the numbers need tuning.

QoL improvement? You can cast max stack BFB very often now, max stack BFB is the best dps spell. It is not just QoL improvement. With 6pc set bonus you get perma living bomb (that will also do more damage because of 2pc bonus), you dont need to spend gcd to refresh it, and you can spend this gcd for something more useful. Also 6pc set allows you cast fire blast more often, that triggers 2pc t2,5 set bonus increasing your chance to critical strike, and increasing your chance to get pyroblast proc, that allows you to also cast max stack BFB (best DPS spell) more often. Looks very strong, and every set bonus incteracts with each other.

I know they haven’t adjusted the items in the sims completely yet, but as of this morning at least Mage is simming pretty much the same as Warlock and Spriest (since you used those as examples).
