I recently returned for Dragonflight and have been enjoying the game, and am currently sitting at 383 item level.
I have done a few Mythics without issue (usually being first or second in DPS), but then I tried pugging some of Normal Vault of the Incarnates. Suddenly, I keep seeing everyone’s DPS far surpassing mine to the point that I cannot stay in a group—in single target situations, no matter what I do, I simply cannot do better than the range of ~22-25K DPS, which is abysmal compared to the 30K minimum that seems to be the common standard (and mind you, average seems to be around 40K). And a fair number of those people end up being a full 20 item levels beneath me.
I have done plenty of simming which seems to put my expected output at around that 30-40K range, but I cannot replicate getting anywhere close to that even after setting up an optimal rotation helper addon and following it to the letter on a Target Dummy (nevermind accounting for dodging mechanics in the actual fights). And mind you, I’m not trying to be perfect—literally my only goal is to be good enough to fly under the radar and not get kicked.
I acknowledge that my talents are a slight deviation from the optimal build, but they’re close enough that they don’t seem to be the cause of this massive discrepancy of damage. I’m pretty much at a loss for figuring out why I’m so low in DPS, is it literally just me being that bad at the game? Is it just my wonked out secondary stats on my gear putting me at only 9% Haste?
I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve never been good at the game, I couldn’t even really play it before Demon Hunter came out because most other classes were just too much for me to keep track of. But it’s never been this hard for me to keep up, usually I could gear enough to compensate for that lack of skill and glide by enough to see the content at least once (which is literally all I want to do), but I just can’t even stay in a group at all to see the raid.
Any help or insight would be appreciated, because I genuinely just don’t understand why I’m performing so poorly in raids.
I had this exact conversation with a friend of mine today. He basically confirmed I suck however, at the same time, I do believe it takes a very unique mind to maximize the potential of a demon hunter and for one reason, MOMENTUM… in current raid, there are so many mechanics to do, that managing rotation, character placement all while zooming back and forth every which way, you need to be thinking 3 steps ahead of yourself and the boss you are fighting (know the fight) to properly apply dps and not die to mechanics. As much as I would like to punish myself and git gud at DH i cant be bothered to mantain a buff every 5 seconds, that potentially could kill me by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Nope. Not for me. So I think if DH ever rolls away from using momentum as a damage buff and not a raid mechanic movement benefit, i probably wont play it seriously. I think fel rush should mainly be used for applying dps a few moments longer than others, then rushing away from the boss to avoid AOE or a frontal cone, then swoop back in as fast as you left.
Another edit, rotation is huge… HUGE for dh. But so is timing, like I immo aura, fel rush threw my target, turn 180 and do the hunt, straight to eye beam, followed by vengeful retreat backward over my target so when I land I am facing them, essence break, blade dance, anhilation x 2, metamorphisis, eye bean, blade dance, anhilation x 2, blade dance, repeat when cd’s are up, fel rush throw glaive all in the mean time, and still do mediocre (60k-90kaverage for aoe, but si gle target 32k) bad dps because most the time i have to space these out too far due to mechanics and not chosing the absolute perfect time to do it

Hey Saraniel,
Based on what I saw via warcraft logs, your in a pretty good place still being in the top 10 dps as your raid run. Keep in mind that over the past three weeks we as a class have recieved a nerf every tuning patch. So think of those minor upgrades you recieved in gear as… truly not being upgrades at all. Plus some classes are still well up above others.
Personally, I have ran every build the streamers and wowhead said is possible and regardless of how much of an advantage Momentum is, I just don’t like it.
A fellow DH and I tonight, with a 5 point difference in ilvl and momentum vs non weren’t that far apart from one another.
When it comes to raid, what it really boils down to is follow your ABCs, ALWAYS BE CASTING. Which is difficult to do on the second raid week because these mechanics 110% favor range vs melee; in my opinion but just like anything else; practice makes perfect.
Even though your 383, make sure you are focusing on the stats your putting in, plus trinkets/enchants and even runes play a role.
Long story short, you’re playing fairly well based on your Warcraft logs, and most importantly staying alive!
We as casual Demon Hunters aren’t a meta class, so don’t aim to be unless you want to spend hours a day going for the meta because time is what truly defines being the best in Wow and those days are long gone for me. Just have fun, your doing fine and all the other classes still have nerf tunings yet to come.
