I like blood but my guild doesnt need me to tank, I was trying both frost and unholy but they dont seem to be all that good, is either competitive? I know I’m probably just doing it wrong.
Yes, both DPS specs for DK are fine in PvE content. You probably aren’t going to be smoking people without experience on the specs (and maybe the axe to an extent), but you’ll be fine if you learn how to play them.
Check out Icy Veins DPS rankings tier list. If you don’t want to look for yourself ill save you some time. Unholy is at the top.
Take this info with a grain of salt. This is the end of the expansion, most over gear the content, they have done some final buffing to make everyone happy going into War Within. I would not expect too much by the end of the first tier of TWW.
So, enjoy unholy …for now. Frost is not competitive, without, high ilvl and the legendary weapon.
But, being competitive is subjective. Maybe, some are doing great on realms that don’t have a lot of competition or guilds that just don’t have strong DPS, so they think Frost is good. But, looking at ALL of it together. Frost not good without, high Ilvl and the leg when comparing against ALL DPS specs across all realms and guilds.
Other classes are doing better with less work …is all im a say.

At the end of the day, this is nothing new. Perfect reason to recommend people play classes based off of whether or not they like the gameplay instead of numbers.
The game is a lot better about this, and everything is viable up to the typical breakpoints for the average player.
The thing is he dident ask if they were fun he asked if they were competitive.

The truth is other classes offer more damage and more utility.
Can u do heroic raid and plus20s as a dk yes but u will be puting in twice the work. It is what it is…

If somebody needs to actually ask if given specs are competitive and they do not know how to find that out by themselves already, they’re probably not in a position where it really matters.
End of the day, doesn’t matter. Every spec can do Mythic raiding or do high keys past the maximum gearing threshold. Viable is one degree of competitiveness, optimal is an entirely different degree of competitiveness.

Was my statement incorrect? Is there a spec that can validly be claimed as being incapable of reaching KSH or getting CE?

Anyways, to bring this back a bit more on-topic:
Competitive would depend on what you mean. Competitive as in “meta”? No. Competitive as in “can do all of the content”? Yes, until you’re notably beyond the point at which rewards aside from top x% titles are given.
If you need an idea of where to start and what to do, I would refer to the Wowhead guides, or take a visit to the DK Discord, Acherus. There are people there who can do log review (if you’re looking at the raiding perspective) to give you an idea of where you might be going wrong.
If you’re referring to Cata Classic, you’d probably be looking for Blight Club, which is a separate DK Discord specifically for Classic.
