Hi, I have a question about the Destruction rotation in M+. From how many targets is it better to cast Rain of Fire instead of Chaos Bolt? Should I use Chaos Bolt every time I get a Havoc proc, even when fighting multiple targets?
Depends on comp, but if you’re doing pulls and low priority targets are dieing early due to aoe and you’re left with 1-3 big targets at a couple hundred mil, then shift towards focusing the big hp targets with CB and let the rest of your comp aoe. If its a big pull like start of flood then its worth using rain, but for something like dawnbreaker when you pull packs of 3-5 you priority CB with havoc on the two big targets.
You’re padding by using aoe on low priority lower hp targets, its a net dps loss if you’re playing with classes with passive cleave (a lot of them) as the longer aoe lives the more their passive cleave does.
say you have a pull that lasts 30 seconds, you kill the small stuff at 20 seconds and 10 seconds with big. Instead if you focus the big from the start, the pull may last 28 seconds, and the small stuff may live to 26. Your dps will be lower in the second pull, but the group dps will be higher, because you’ve allowed other specs with passive cleave to use it for a longer duration.
Even with a pack of 5-8 (where you’ll use RoF), if there’s a big boy or bad caster, pump CB into him until dead.
8+ targets RoF until pack size withers down (badoom ching) then see above.
It’s a mix of shard generation and priority target importance.
But keeping things simple and just pumping numbers, in heavy AOE (8+) you want to be throwing out RoF’s constantly. Your shards go to RoF.
In heavy AOE the important part of Havoc is not the damage it is Soul Shard generation, because it doubles it, meaning more RoF’s.
Perfect situation would be having Havoc and an instant Soul Fire, that means 2 Soul Shards.
Another good spell to throw out during Havoc in AOE is Conflagate.
For like 4-6 targets yeah I’d still be using my CBs.
As Diabolist, you’ll almost never use ROF. So stick with Chaos Bolt in M+ as Diabolist. You use Diabolist on low target dungeons or with a heavy boss focus… Dawnbreaker and Streets of Wonder are good choices, especially Dawnbreaker. You play this pretty identically to the raid ST build, with a few cleave talents.
As Hellcaller, almost never cast Chaos Bolt unless it is A) boss fight/single target, B) to nuke a priority add or C) 1-3 target pulls with a priority add. You can start hitting ROF at 3 targets if it’s going to live a while, I personally switch up with a few Chaos Bolts and a few ROF’s mixed in between, so you get some priority damage on an important add while also still cleaving. It’s less about your Rain of Fire/Chaos Bolt damage as Hellcaller, and its more about spending Soul Shards to build your Blackened Soul damage up and Wither stacks. Rain of Fire is instant and burns more Soul Shards than Chaos Bolt, which is why it’s so much better (and obviously in of itself does better damage on big packs).
