With the sweeping changes to all professions in Dragonflight, combined with the regional commodity Auction House, is anyone thinking about switching around professions on alts?
In Shadowlands it was always “optimal” to stack professions to lessen grinds. One character with Blacksmithing and Jewelcrafting for plate armor and rings/necks, a second with Leatherworking and Tailoring for mail, leather and cloth armor, etc. In Dragonflight we won’t have recipes locked behind reputation anymore, and even the crafter’s mark system is basically being built in so we won’t have to go earn rep or do story/campaign progress on every alt for those either.
I was already thinking about swapping professions around a bit on alts as I choose new main-alts for the next expansion and I don’t want them all to be just default herbalist miners like most of them are now…but the more I think about it, the more I wonder about actually splitting up my Blacksmithing and Engineering onto two separate characters, and giving them both mining to go along with it. Dropping Alchemy on my Scribe and giving her Herbalism again.
What do you think?
I know materials will definitely be cheaper at the start of an expansion than ever before thanks to the region wide AH, but I really like the idea of being able to gather materials on any character while I’m out questing or leveling again, without dooming myself to grinding to Honored with some new “crafter’s mark rank 70” faction eleventy-billion times every new patch.
I’ll be honest I plan on going Herbal as druids are great for herb gathering and Tailoring for bags. Odd combo I know but bags will continue to sell as well as cloth sets for mogs and such in the future.
I will run double gather as I usually do. Makes it easy to never worry about crafting stuff. No chasing recipes or burning mats to level up.
As long as I can afford basic gems and enchants I’ll be fine.
In the past I have generally funneled herbs to one alchemist so I can have my own flask/potion maker.
We’ll see if this works ok for DL. If not I’ll adjust as needed.
Edit - Another reason to run double gather, mining/herbalism, is because you get exp when you collect nodes. Making the grind to max go a little bit faster.

Im having the same concerns. I wish we knew more about the BoP reagents for the higher ilvl recipes. I originally thought i should go double crafter on my main as i would have an easier time getting the high level reagents. But is there a cap on looting them?
The Sparks of Ingenuity? I saw recently on the Beta that you can get those from gathering too, if rarely. Not sure if there’s a cap or anything.
The problem im having right now with this is, im an engineer and a JC.
Im debating about dropping JC for mining, because i will never drop Eng.
I like the prof changes, but my biggest worry about being a JC, and one i have not seen addressed is that even with all these changes, if gear does not have sockets on it, JC is still worthless.
If JC is viable ill probably stay eng JC, but if JC is once more a pointless prof because there is no gear with sockets on it, ill abandon it after 2 exp of trying to justify it.
My other big concern about prof though is also how viable they will remain. Prof are great and all at the start of an exp, but are they going to keep it up? Nothing is more frustrating then creating a pair of goggles as an eng only to have them be replaced by mid level M+ content.

I believe in the beta crafted items have the highest item level / can be upgraded to be competitive with the mythic plus gear….Unless I am mistaken…
I remember in an interview with Ion that their philosophy for Dragonflight was to never force players to HAVE to do any one part of the game to be competitive. Eg there are going to be ways to have competitive gear without necessarily doing mythic+ etc or doing rated pvp etc.
Lets hope they stay true to that approach

Yes in order to make something mythic you still have to go into mythic +to get mythic level materials…
