What’s so confusing here? You typed out the answer to all your confusion. Yikes…
Then Blizzard keep anything raised over the 3 million threshold.
That’s important information to share also.
If it were “We’ll donate $3,000,000 regardless of the proceeds raised.”
It’d be one thing. But capping something that is advertised as 100% of the proceeds raised until December 31st is just kinda sketchy.
I don’t think so.
Its great that they want to donate.
But its understandable that they want to see profits on their work at some point.
Not as sketchy as the esports collection plate they handed out.
This is honestly a nonissue. It’s going to charity up to a point, and then the company profits off it after that. I mean… welcome to America.
You realize this is a GINORMOUS tax writeoff for them, right?
Don’t act like they get nothing out of it.
It means you are crapping on people trying to do a good thing.
tax on nothing though as they get nothing.
Explain how thats a pro for them
I don’t think so.

Profiting off charity. What a world.

They are still donating the money. You do realize that, right? We are giving Blizzard the money to give to the charities. The money is not going directly to the charity.
That’s not how this works.
There’s a reason I can buy Dottie with Blizzard Balance.
depends on if you think they would make more post the 3m cut off than if they weren’t doing charity at all.
I’m a bit confused. Perhaps someone can clarify this for me.
Activision Blizzard is offering a pet to raise money for charity. This is a good thing. It even says in the explanatory website about it:
" we’ll donate 100% of the purchase price* to be shared equally with Make-A-Wish® and WE."*
That’s great, thinks I, nice way to raise money for kids. But then I read down to the fine print and it says:
“…with a maximum donation amount of USD $3 million from all sales of the Dottie in-game pet and plushie for charity.”
So what does that actually mean? Am I reading it wrong? Does it mean that if the toy sales reach USD$4 million, they get to keep USD$1 million? That the money people paid to them thinking it would go to help children will instead go into their pockets?
Really, am I reading that wrong
Your not wrong other then seriously giving Blizzard crap for donating more money in a month then you will probably make in your entire life. And by the way…
That the money people paid to them thinking it would go to help children will instead go into their pockets?
This doesn’t go with
“…with a maximum donation amount of USD $3 million from all sales of the Dottie in-game pet and plushie for charity.”
It’s right there for everyone to see. Get a grip, you didn’t find some mustache twisting plot by Blizzard. Get off your high horse and either donate or don’t but don’t try to put a damper on something they are doing while you sit in your chair looking for drama.
Edit: by the way you should be ashamed of yourself for your garbage post OP.
but legally anything up to 3m they cannot keep and have to donate.
Yes they are a middle man but tax wise that doesn’t change anything?
Look.
If you don’t approve of a business making money off a charity event (which they all do, btw. that’s why they do this at all.) then just directly donate to charity.

Blizzard are free to donate any of their significant earnings at any time.
Creating a situation where they are going to profit from their “charitable” donation is sketchy as.
They still donate it. Which is a tax writeoff.
…you do understand how taxes for corporations work, right?
I don’t think so.
Its great that they want to donate.
But its understandable that they want to see profits on their work at some point.
Profiting on charity the American dream
tax wise that doesn’t change anything?
It changes a lot.
They don’t hold it in escrow. They get the money as income and then make a lump donation at the end of the month. That means they would pay income tax on it, but since it’s then given to charity, they get to write off the tax.
tax on money they dont keep
it would be different if they got to avoid tax on those after the 3m that they are not donating.
But that 3m is just charity.
They’re giving the charity 3 million dollars. How much did you give?
