New to mage, I think I’ve got the combustion burst down but I don’t really know what to do for damage outside of combustion? I’m talking pvp don’t really care about pve.
Run away and don’t die till combustion comes back … lol

lol thats what i’ve been doing but theres been plenty of times where healer’s cc’ed and partner has dps low where i just kinda blank on what to cast if combustion is down. I’m kyrian btw if that matters.
You can try CCing enemy team.
But if you haven’t downed atleast 1 enemy by the time combustion is over … your in deep 
lol damnit i dont get a kill in every combustion opener! Maybe I can just fart around until we get cd’s from the enemy team before I do combust burst.
just spam fireballs for pyrokinesis, if you run flamecannon the damage is actually decent too. if theyre training you and you have no comb and no fireblasts, dont go for healer cc unless theyre way out of position or something. just spam sheep on dps and try to fit dinky fireballs in while kiting until comb is back up
So let’s say there’s a min left on combustion and i’ve got full sheep on heals and my partner has the other dps at 50% and stunned. What exactly should I press for damage since we can maybe get a kill in this situation? Kyrian ability then meteor then two fireblast/pyroblast?
if ur dps cant wait for your go, then its prolly meteor fireball fb, hope the fireball crit, pyro fb. or meteor fireball fb fb pyro if it didnt crit.
i cant speak for kyrian ability cus i never played it, but id figure itd be before meteor yea
I’m not super versed in PvP but I’m guessing sneaking in some cheeky Greater Pyros when Combust is done would be a decent play. Also it you have the talent that reduces Combust’s CD by 1 sec when you crit with most your fire spells (can’t remember name and idk if that’s the default talent for PvP), it might be worth it to try to just maximize getting off more Fireballs/Fire Blasts in downtime to get Combust CD back up quicker.
Yes, fire is lacking outside of combust windows and your overall in dungeon can drop significantly if you don’t have a tank who pulls around your burst windows.
However, if you run incenter’s circlet (fevered incantation legendary) and put a little bit of crit into your stat weights (I am at 30% right now) you’ll fine its easier to gain get a crit from a fireball, then just weave in an occasional fire blast for a hot streak and land a pyro. This will improve your single target damage outside of combust.
And for aoe pulls outside of combust, use rune of power, shifting power, and hard cast flame strikes.
But honestly, Fire ball needs almost a 15% damage increase to be balanced with other classes that perform adequately outside of their cool downs. This is where fire is lacking.

spam fireball and fish for crits (if you’re running pyrokinesis this will lower combustion cooldown)

If you’re running the Searing Touch Talent, spam scorch when they drop below half health and hope someone chunks them so you can get the guaranteed crit.
weave in a Gpie if you’re running it.
You’re basically CC bot outside of combust.
Run rune of power, cast it and spam fireballs. Spam sheep x3 on everyone.

Might as well do nothing lol. I am being facetious of course but it’s not far off the mark. It’s ridiculous how reliant on cooldown stacking mages are. It’s really just terribly design that Blizzard themselves have said they don’t intend yet they create content that promotes it. /shrug
