Seems to me Neptulon would be a better fit for the last boss of the next raid tier. Azshara is just way too powerful and iconic enemy to defeat before the end of the expansion.
I figure we will end up fighting N’zoth before Azshara. Yes I know the next patch is called “Rise of Azshara”. It isn’t, however, called the “Defeat of Azshara”.

Serious Long Answer: Neptulon was part of the Shaman Class Hall in Legion. Therefore he was free.
Wait really? When did I miss him escaping?
Lorewise he escaped after we saw the kraken take him. He fought the Kraken off-screen.
We only learned about that in Legion though, by talking to him with a Shaman character in the Shaman Class Hall.
He escaped off-screen.

The vashjir story was cut short sadly, so some parts happened offscreen
One observation: Neptulon freeing himself off-screen is probably a side effect of the cancellation of the Abyssal Maw Raid. It’s likely that we would free him there but since we didn’t go there he had to free himself lol
I always felt that was a missed point in Legion. A LOT of things happened aside from the main story that, unless you played every class hall, you wouldnt know about yet is super important to the world and story going forward.
Like it wasnt till I was leveling my shaman I found out what happened to Thrall, one of the most important lore characters in the series.
I need a Lorewalker Cho in Dalaran to give me a basic summary of things my class might have missed or something.
