Does WoW work with a VPN?

I recently installed a VPN for security and I’m trying to play WoW, and some decidedly weird things are happening.

I was just wondering if this is normal, or what are some experiences from others?

Thanks!

Blizzard does not officially support VPNs for any of their game titles. In other words: if you use a VPN and run into issues like lag, disconnecting often, incur cooldown penalties, get locked out of your account due to hopping IPs constantly, etc., then you’re responsible for troubleshooting and resolving those issues.

That said, lots of people play on VPNs. The performance will likely be worse since most VPNs aren’t designed to optimize gaming traffic — and sometimes they even deprioritize it.

You can still use your VPN for security for your regular internet related things, but I’d configure it to not run WoW through it. There isn’t really anything to gain by playing the game through a VPN, seeing how the server handles all client information and other players have zero access to any of your connection data. This isn’t a peer-to-peer based game.

If you want security in WoW, use an authenticator. I could give you my account name and password, but the Earth would be consumed by the sun going red giant, before you’d manage to log into it.
