I bought 200 herbs(2 star quality), and didnt learn a single new recipe from doing Wild Experimentation. Before I waste more gold, does it even work? Whats the best way to learn new recipes?
Yes, it does work, but youâll need more herbs - 200 herbs is only 10 experiments (20 herbs per craft). You could get lucky and get a discovery within that amount, but you could also not.
Generally you only Wild Experiment when Meticulous Experiment (the daily guaranteed experiment) is on cooldown and you really need recipes right now. Youâll want to max out the middle wheel of the âalchemical masteryâ tree enough to make formulated courage and chug one of those before going ham on the experiments, since it stops the experiments backfiring.
youâll also want to make sure you havenât already learned everything using the herb youâre experimenting with, or if youâre working toward a specific item, youâre using one of the herbs in it - for example if you want to unlock the flask of alchemical chaos, you canât experiment with mycobloom as alchemical chaos doesnât use mycobloom.
the amount of herbs it takes to unlock a recipe is random. for example, today i burned a stack of 1,000 mycobloom and got 1 recipe on my goblin. then i bought another 2000 mycobloom, came back, and earned four recipes close together. the alchemical mastery tree has sub-categories for each herb, opening them up (even if you donât fill out the wheels) improves your chances of learning recipes while experimenting with that herb.
star quality of herb ime doesnât lead to higher success chance with the recipes, it just leads to higher quality âwasteâ potions generated whilst experimenting. higher quality potions do tend to neutralise into more catalyst to experiment with, but the difference is negligible.
tl;dr: get formulated courage from the centre wheel of the alchemical mastery specialisation tree, neck it straight from the bottle like a boss (chug chug chug chug), burn 5,000 r1 blessing blossom or orbinid (cos theyâre cheap), hope for the best.
edit to add: if you donât have enough KP to max out the alchemical mastery centre wheel, go grab your one-time alchemy profession knowledge treasures:
https://www.wow-professions.com/guides/the-war-within/profession-knowledge-treasure-locations
Do your patron orders and the weekly quest (buy some rank 2 vials on the AH if your skill is too low to make the r2 potion and flask order requirements, as the vials are the heaviest weighting when determining quality). donât forget to visit the darkmoon faire for 2 skill and 3 free knowledge points, as itâs up now until saturday. if you have spare kej on any of your characters, use the transfer option in the currency window to put it on your alchemist and go to ahnâkahet - find the alchemy trainer in the bazaar and buy a one-time 10 knowledge point book.
if you have the rep, you can also buy books from the council quartermaster in dornogal and the goblin quartermaster in undermine for 10 KP each. they cost 50 acuity, but you get that back after learning the books, so theyâre basically free knowledge.
This was really helpful! Just to confirm, that centre wheel talent is called Orbinid Lore? Also, whats kej?
EDIT: Nvm, I found out what Kej areâŚjust came back to the game
The center wheel is called alchemical mastery. It is at 30 knowledge points. If you mouse over it says âLearn to craft Formulated Courageâ.
Also just fyi there are usually multiple ways to level a profession. A fast but expensive way, a slow but inexpensive way, and sparks.
If you donât want to spend as much gold and you donât mind waiting, the slow and inexpensive route for alchemy is Meticulous Experimentation. You can only do it once per day (20 hr CD) but itâs guaranteed so you donât need to use as many materials. This too will eventually give you every recipe while also leveling you up.
thanks for clearing that up!
Edit: 40 straight wild experiments and not a single new discovery, even when using increased concentrationâŚvery frustrating
Edit 2: it took 56 tries, but I finally discovered a new recipe with Wild Experimentation. With the low RNG on this, Iâm not sure that its a good way to find new recipesâŚor is it the only way to discover some of them?
No, meticulous experimentation will unlock all the same experiments as Wild experimentation, just on a daily cooldown.
Wild experimentation is intended for rich people in a hurry with mats to spare. If thereâs no hurry, experimenting once a day with meticulous experimentation will get you the same result at a fraction of the cost.
So just fyi, concentration does not increase the chance of making a discovery. Sometimes experimentation will pop out a potion or flask; concentration increases the rank of those.
The only thing that increases the probability of discovery is the alchemy bag, made by tailors:
And also, yes, wild experimentation does have a very low probability of discovery. You can find all the recipes in a single day, but it requires a massive amount of materials.
Your sure its available at the AH? Thereâs none at my AH, and its bind on pickup, not bind on equip. I was able to find a 38 slot Dawnweave reagent bag at the AH, though.
the dawnweave bag is a reagent bag and is BoE, so it sits in a special slot in your bag bar and you can buy it on the AH. you can only get one and it only holds crafting mats.
the concoctorâs clutch is a BOP bag that sits in your regular bag bar like any other bag, but as long as you have it up it applies a unique effect. you can also only have one of them. you canât buy it on the AH but you can put in a craft order for a tailor to make it. it costs 150 acuity (but you might be able to buy the acuity off the tailor, just be aware this could be expensive) as well as some other mats.
if you donât know where or how to place a craft order, the craft order NPCs are inside/just outside the crafting guild hall with lyrendal, the recipe vendor, on the eastern side of the dornogal forgegrounds (just a bit to the east and up some stairs from the leatherworking trainer, if you ask a guard for directions to him you should find it).
talking to the craft order NPCs opens an AH-like menu; you want to click âcontainerâ on the left-hand side then look for âconcoctorâs clutchâ. when you click it it will pull up another window showing you the mats you need. if you click âtrack recipeâ (a small box under the icon) itâll pin the mat list to your screen under your quest log, allowing you to run to the AH to buy the mats.
with crafting orders, you can put it up in one of three categories:
- personal order: allows you to specify a crafter who can make it. useful for crafting gear, as it allows you to set the minimum quality (item level) you want on gear, however less useful for bags as they donât have a quality level.
- guild order - exactly the same as the above however it throws open the order to anyone in your guild who has the recipe to fill it. it wonât ping or alert your guildies, so you might want to follow up with a message in guild chat or the guild discord (if applicable) to let them know you have an order waiting.
- public order: this order means any tailor who happens to check their tailoring table will see it and make it. this option usually means you canât choose the quality order so people donât like it for gear, but itâs perfect for a bag like this that only comes in 1 quality: bag. if your serverâs quiet, and i find a lot of them are at the end of the season, you might want to post a quick message in trade like, âi posted a public rder for an alchemy bag if any tailors are around.â larger servers no need to worry - there are hundreds of crafters scanning orders all the time and your bag will probably be made within half an hour.
So Iâm not advising you to get the bag, just saying that is the only way I know of to increase the probability. It gives +3% probability, which is not that great.
But if you were to get the bag, it costs 150 acuity. The mats can be any rank since the bag does not have quality (i.e. you can buy rank 1 and rank 2 mats, whatever is cheaper).
Once you cannot discover any more recipes it has no use other than being a normal 36 slot bag.
That was so informative and helpful!! I was able to place an order and had all matsâŚexpensive, but probably worth it in the long run IMO. Order was fulfilled in 2 minutes. I just cant figure out how to equip it. I cant see all my bags, just the main backpack and reagent bag. When I tried to put it in the reagent bag slot, I was given an error. If I can figure out how to see all bags, I can probably figure out how to equip it. Must be a setting somewhere that I havent found.
Itâs a bag so it goes in the bag slot. Itâs not a reagent bag. It holds regular items.
Do you have a bag addon? Do you see an arrow to expand the bag slots next to your backpack?
The usefulness of the buff this bag provides is very short. Do your daily meticulous experiments and you Will get all the recipes. No need for that bag. Of all the profession bags TWW introduced, the alchy one is probably the dumbest.
This is all I see

Do you have an addon like bartender? Or another UI addon? Or bag addon? It looks to me like there is something turning the frame off and the expander toggle (little yellow arrow).
Try to run the following code. Copy and paste into your âsayâ chat window.
/run if BagBarExpandToggle then BagBarExpandToggle:Show() end
This should make the little arrow that expands out your bag slot visible again.
And just for good measure:
/run for i=0,3 do _G["CharacterBag"..i.."Slot"]:Show() end; MainMenuBarBackpackButton:Show()
This should make the bag slots visible on your screen again.
However they will go away again once whatever addon is making them disappear on restart or reload. So time to look through your addon options.
The best way to learn new recipes is to wait for the next exp !
Neither line of code worked. Yes, I use Bartender4. Iâm going to disable it and see if that lets me use the bag.
EDIT: Yes, disabling Bartender let me use the bag, ty
