Does this game even really attract new players?

I just feel like the vast majority of the game’s subscriber base are people who’ve been playing this game for years.

Nope. It’s not new player friendly and I would never recommend it to anyone.

You have a bunch of old timers that just design it to how they like to play because it’s to their advantage.

Hence the leveling changes and level squish coming in Shadowlands.

We need some new blood.

Nope. I always say, Blizzards continued efforts to make the game more casual and accessible has achieved the opposite effect, at least in my experiences.

I have a few friends from college who all ended up trying WoW, only one of them is still playing. The biggest reason they quit were because the gearing was too confusing, and the different corruption/titanforging systems throughout the expansion turned them off.

I stated this another post about BiS slots and the BFA gear treadmill. My one friend who started playing in BFA leveled his Priest from level 1-120 and he started gearing at max level. He asked me where he could find the best staff for his priest. I had to explain to him how titanforging, random gem slots, random secondary stats, and random azerite traits worked in the game. He did not like those systems even in the slightest along with the randomness behind each one, and ended up quitting.

I think the BFA RNG systems have definitely turned off new players, and I personally won’t recommend it to anyone until SL comes out.

I see new players from time to time. Right now I wouldn’t really call it that friendly though. But Shadowlands is dramatically improving that front, it’ll become much more inviting for new people.

I mean, I personally brought in three new players so I could earn the Recruit stuff, but only one of them is still playing (because of financial issues on part of the other two).

The one still playing it absolutely loves it though shrugs

There are 2 new players in my guild. So they exist. But they’re not common.

Impossible to say since we don’t have access to those metrics. Anything else is just anecdotal. And I mean, how often do you talk to random people in game anyway?

But given that the Shadowlands changes are specifically there to make the game more attractive to new people I would say its seen as a potential problem from Blizzard’s perspective.

I have helped a few new players recently. I can tell you there are some new people coming to play but we really don’t know how many there are.
I hope some of the new stuff for Shadowlands is going to open the door for new people.

That’s not mutually exclusive to attracting new players.

I’ve ran into some this year, like 1 or 2. Or so they said.

I also run into people that skipped MoP/WoD/Legion or a combo of those.

That being said, I think I’ve seen what the rest of the gaming world thinks of us, and it’s pretty funny. My boss, a gamer and a DnD player/DM on one of our campaigns, has called me an uber nerd because ‘you still play WoW, do people even play that still?’.

Considering the source, it was a hilarious indictment.

On the forums its easier to say no new players then it is in game

I just literally helped two low levels on my realm asking me how to get to the exodar

I think the level squish just by itself will attract more people to the game. Seeing 60 instead of 130 is so much less intimidating and so much more inviting to new players, at least in my opinion.

So long as pathfinder exists the game will never be friendly to new players.

I mean yes, but the toxicity of some of the community probably drives them away, precisely because of what you said. A good number of people seem to think everyone has played for years and already knows everything and is in a mad rush to max level, so I’m sure actual new players get really awful experiences especially in dungeons.

I’ve seen a good number of people say how they have no patience for someone new in a dungeon, they’re only there for quick XP etc. etc. selfish garbage. That can’t help the game’s appeal to anyone new.

I would never bring my retired father into the game with Pathfinder existing because he would hit level cap and want to fly like everybody else and when he is told that he has to do months of chores to get it, he’d be like, “ain’t nobody got time for that,” and go back to playing clash of the clans.

Not only that nonsense the PvP system needs to change as well.

How are new players ever going to compete with the veterans? It’s lambs to the slaughter every time.
