Genn is not a good commander thats why. He lets his emotions rule him which has blown up in his face several times in the past.
Also he was down Zappi boi got him only Anduin's healing saved him. If Saurfang had killed Anduin the Horde charge would have gone unhindered. They would have slaughtered the Alliance and forced a retreat.
