I was reading about the Gnomish Death Ray on wowhead and classicdb and couldn’t get a good answer on how exactly its damage is calculated. Right now, it seems completely random (like most Gnomish inventions.)
Some people are saying it hits for 1k while others are saying 9k. I’ve used it a few times and have only seen 700-1000 damage. My guess is the average damage will scale with my level and gear, but I’m not certain.
Does anyone know?
It’s obviously the length of the users “ray” that determines the damage.
it takes a random % of your hp and does double it to the opponent it is capable of critting so it scales off your max HP.
Boring Granger! Stop sucking up to the teachers.
I’ve also noticed PW: Shield absorbs the self-damage. When you say it takes a percentage, does PW: Shield factor into that?
I wanna see someone on thaddius use this now.

I thought it took a raw amount of hp. You can kill yourself at high % if you’re low level.
Got it to hit pretty hard on a mob out in Tanaris. My health was cut in half and my PW: Shield was completely absorbed.

It’s random, but you can tell how much it’s going to do by how much it hurts you. It drains X amount of hp, and does y damage to the enemy. It also can crit.
My biggest complaint is the fact that it does Physical damage. Seems to me it should do some kind of elemental damage like Nature, Fire, or Shadow.
Whatever the life ticks for when it channels, it does 7x that in physical damage. I don’t think its reduced by armor though. It can crit. I have not seen anything about scaling.
The PW: Shield interaction is particular interesting to me. I’m essentially turning it into a weapon now.
Your characters health pool maximum at the time of use. PWS does not increase damage otherwise Divine shield would create a 1 shot condition.
I guess it’d be better if I explain what numbers I’m seeing.
With my current gear and PWF buffed, I’m at 1.9k health. I’m also using Rank 7 PWS at level 44. This shield absorbs 490 damage. On average, when I’ve used the death ray, PWS is completely absorbed plus maybe 100 extra health. Then, the mob is hit for about 700-900 damage.
This is Physical damage, which I am to take to mean that it’s also reduced by armor. When I say that PWS is essentially being used as a “weapon” here, what I mean is that it’s taking the bulk of whatever self-damage the death ray is dealing and converting it into raw Physical damage.
Only twice, so far, have I seen the death ray take the PWS in addition to a good chunk of my own health before hitting for about 1.8k.
Ah, ok makes perfect sense. yeah in your case like a paladin with a bubble you get pure pure almost no risk damage out of it.
Pally bubble isn’t immune to the damage. The pally is dealt the damage thru his shield.
Zero damage is taken to the paladin with Paladin bubble up.

actual Vanilla PVP, not Classic, and I don’t care if “classic” does it differently because different client, the real game the paladin takes no damage. I don’t hvae eng on my paladin yet, but odds are it takes no damage in classic since it was the same in vanilla.
They specifically nerfed it. It damages you through shield now.
LOL when was this? During classic I presume?
Yeah. I don’t remember it doing that in Vanilla. I know my paladin buddy used to use it all the time in Vanilla. But back in like phase 3 I was dueling a paladin friend and watched him kill himself with it while divine shielded, so… yeah. I think Dark Runes and Demonic Runes also hurt through divine shield now.
Edit: I can confirm for a fact they do. I logged on my pala and tested it.
