Does the game actually need a tank spec?

Running around in a new druid I started today thinking about how if it can keep a group healed, if it can then keep itself healed and toss out a little threat (sorry, that was an obvious joke given how often the healer manages to pull aggro off the tank anyway)…do we need a separate tank spec?

healer heals…helps keep four DPS players above zero health.
DPS could be just a little tougher than they are now, and as with every expansion ending, no need whatsoever for a tank spec since doing a lot of damage seems to put out enough threat.

I guess the real point is…why have a spec thats basically hamstrung for DPS half the time just to give that spec a little more threat and a little more defense?

Just one more spec to have to wait in queue for at this point…and as many here have said many times…we dont need tanks anyway. DPS can just do it all

Just thinking out loud, really.

In any content other than mythic dungeons and raids: no. Most classes have enough innate survivability. But if you’re doing relevant content, yes.

I can say I feel safe with blood death knights than most tanks.

i wonder if they could just modify the high end content for tankless play?

That would require either bosses to have scripted positioning outside of player interaction, or for them to not do enough damage to be deadly. Both options sound abysmal.

yeah…I guess that makes sense.
Theyd probably want the same formula of three specs all thru the game for consistency Id imagine.
ah well…just thinking

Gw2 does this.

You don’t even need a healer for most content because each spec has enough survivability and self heals.

At the highest levels of content though it swings back to heals and a tankish (raids and t4 factals) I think because the developers found it too limiting designing harder content without healer/tank roles

I need to get back on that game. I miss playing my asura condition warrior.

yep the old 3 specs paradigm is getting real old.

Tanks/Healers/Dps really need to change.

There shouldnt be a need for a specialized role.

The most popular games out there nowadays dont rely on a tank/healer/dps setup.

I think they need to take some concepts from GW2 and ESO and create something brand new with it to keep classes interesting to play. Right now this Diablo talent tree layout is bland on a lot of levels.

Some people like playing a tank - its not a problem that needs to be fixed. More and varied tank specs would be cool though

I havent done any real group content in ESO yet…i just run in the public dungeons and delves…but from what I understand its just a staff that makes you a ‘healer’.
Restoration staff, I believe…though again I havent bothered with that stuff yet.
I guess there is no healer ‘spec’.

Which games are those ?

Every man for himself Battle Royals ?

This is an MMORPG so the 3 specs are part of the genre .

Even games like Overwatch use this concept.

Based on my last few mmos; no there were ‘tanky’ classes but no specialisations as such.

You could also build a certain way. A Paladin could build either a ton of evasion or damage reduction and tank that way while remaining two handed. Downside being classes like that in that game became too popular because at a high enough skill level you could solo everything.

With that said, I think it is ‘ok’ in Warcraft - i keep a full set of separate gear for my other specs that I play and it automatically switches to it.

As jorgenor says, some people do prefer it. My boss always played tanked specs and preferred it because he’d pulled everything mindlessly while watching TV with his fiancé. Our guild tank, is absolutely deadset in love with tanking. He can DPS decently as dps if needed but he can tank AND dps.

So for some people it’s a lifestyle.

Which ones are those? I mean, assuming you’re referencing any kind of similar game. Cause if you’re like “CoD and Borderlands and the Last of Us didn’t have tank/healer/dps”, then it doesn’t really matter right? So, what most popular MMORPGs don’t have it?

If you’re talking about queueable dungeon content, sure, all actually challenging expac ending content requires tanks.

MMOs are a dying breed compared to the most popular games out there now.

Playerunknown, Fortnite, League, CoD etc
They are a different genre but they are way way more popular.
They compete in a way with WoW because people only have so much time.
Those games are way more accessible and if WoW wants to grow, WoW also needs to be more accessible.

Tanks/Healers/DPS is getting old and stale.
There is really no need to keep to this formula.
Just need to think out of the box.
People can have plenty of fun in a fantasy MMO without requiring any of these roles.

I like RIFT’s model where all classes (even rogues and mages) could choose to tank (or heal or dps) and had viable builds.

Agree and at least the level squish and double-speed leveling in just 1 xpac of Shadowlands is a good move in that direction.

Tbh I would like to see tanking distributed. Actually I’d like everyone to be DPS and bring some form of support: taunt, survivablilty (team shield, and/or heal on CD) and maybe a damage mitigation CD too, that way people take turns doing the support role.

It really irritates me that MMOs in general are actually a test of DPS player skill, yet finding a group/gearing up as a DPS takes way longer because everyone thinks they can but really can’t. I feel like I’m guaranteed more successful runs on my mage, but often tank on my other characters because it’s an easier way to find groups. It’s just super disappointing when we don’t make it and I know I would have done better than the other DPS.

I just find it annoying that Tanking/healing are binary, either they do their job or don’t, but DPS is scalar, with many BiS slots, yet, finding groups to get said slots is a PITA.

Getting rid of that formula would be like getting rid of factions. It’s part of what makes WoW, WoW. If they got rid of them, more than likely I’d spend all my time on League, not just the little bit of time I do when I’m not playing WoW.
