Does HC discourage exploring solo?

Yesterday I lost my lvl 17 warrior in Westfall. I was out at the shore and came across the sunken ship. So I climbed up and took on two murlocs. Then I pulled another which I thought was by himself and like 3 others came at me. That’s when I turned around and jumped in the water to try and get away but there was to many of them hitting me. I lost my progression in cooking blacksmithing and mining and first aid.

The question though is. I wanted to go out exploring. I wanted to see if any treasures or quests were on the ship. So now on my new toon, I will not try and explore the world as much.

So you thought it would be safe to go swimming in murlock infested waters? That is always a risky thing to do because even if you kill one, some of them will sprint away and pull 15 more :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Come on now, you knew better than that! :joy:

My advice is that if you truly want to explore the world safely, play regular classic.

You can always come back at a higher level if you want to explore a zone.

Mobs that run like gnolls and murlocs, I try to range them to see how many they pull than straight melee

Trying to finish up the gnoll paws in Westfall. I would see how many I can pick off in the camp. Three was pushing it but ideally, I went for two.

From my perspective, I find myself going slower and exploring more, now that I know I am not immortal. When exploring I may find dangers, but also pleasant surprises. If I were not playing Hardcore, I would not be as detail oriented.

Curiosity killed the cat.

Yes it does. Because HC is more about knowledge the game. The more you know, the less chance it is for you to die. Exploring means you’re taking a risk of going somewhere you don’t know what is waiting for you.

As others said, if you want to explore safely, try regular classic or retail.

I doubt he was thinking very much.

Basically, yes. In HC, it’s about managing your risk, because the primary goal at all times is to avoid death. So you are always weighing objectives, execution and approach against risk of death in a way that you aren’t doing in a non-HC mode. It requires de-prioritizing things you may find fun but which have uncertain risk, unless you are willing to soak up the RIP and restart.

That’s hilarious. I know the spot you speak of. You can explore, but the world is dangerous. You just gotta be careful. Mobs like to BAF

Experiencing the world as a new player, or at least, exploring areas you don’t know is not a good idea for the game mode that is based on risk assessment and knowledge.

If you want to explore the 20 year old world, then you’re better not doing it in HC.

play era ppl are missin the fun of classic bc of hc.
the game is still fun and u still need to be careful in classic era
its all the fun w/o the thought of permadeath so if u ever wanna do that…
might be dead tho lol

exploring dangerous areas carries danger.

Warlock curse of recklessness ftw.

Ships are just soggy caves with a Z axis. BEWARE

There is nothing scarier than diving underwater for those quests between drowning and fighting mobs. Which makes sense.

If I’ve learned anything past week…

Fight often on roads and not deep into distant territory. Unless you have a group or you have greatly out level that area.

Last night I nearly bought the farm with one of those little dragon whelps in red ridge and that was just after managing to survive two Pillager attacks.

I was like Yep and had enough for tonight.

Yep.

I think it’s just hard for a lot of players to adjust, because leveling hasn’t been taken seriously in WoW for a long, long time, and we’ve never had an official HC mode in WoW before. In WoW, many people tend to approach leveling with a “push it to the max” approach, YOLOing around, aggroing up as many mobs as possible and so on to “get it over with”, and that’s fine in much of retail, but in HC of course it’s a no-no. “Safety first” while leveling is just something people are totally unused to thinking about, and so they are just playing more or less normally and then they find themselves in a situation where they are out on a limb and remember that it’s HC, and blam, RIP.

I find the challenge of adjusting fun, but clearly it’s a big adjustment for many, as you can see from the constant alerts of people dying at level 5 and so on.

This is a classic “if you’re gonna be dumb, you’ve gotta be tough” example.

Explore more once you out-level a region/zone.

Doesn’t stop me from exploring solo, but I am a hunter.
